  • crashed my festiva

Today was not the best day of my life. I got out of my 3 1/2 hour long calculus class ready to go, first one out the door. Evidently I was a little too excited. Exiting my community college is downhill to a T-intersection. The light was green, no one there, didn't want to miss it, flying. I was just doing too many things at once. Recently I have been especially focusing on improving my heel-toe downshifting. I had to press the brakes pretty hard approaching the intersection as I was going pretty fast, and unfortunately my gas pedal went down pretty far too because before/entering the turn as I eased off the clutch and breaks, I was in gear with way more power than I had intended. I would have been fine just flying around the turn and riding a little into the shoulder, but in this case the shoulder is old pavement that drops down like 6 inches. Knowing this I tried to keep left not to dip off the edge. I can't remember if either of my right tires went off the edge, I think at least my back one did. But next thing I know, I pulled hard left and braked, and went left understeering into the middle, hit a sign and here's what I look like:

okay so for me those pictures are huge, sorry about that if you want to see them you can drag them into a new tab or here's the link http://imgur.com/a/ICEVB

I am pretty disappointed in myself and sad that this happened. Especially since I want to go autocrossing in July. The good news is it isnt extremely terrible, it looks fixable. From the back wheels I think now is a pretty good time to get an aspire rear beam. I would say I got pretty lucky, the only body damage is to the hood and the fender. Broke both corner lights and the driver's side headlight, which is kinda funny because I needed a new headlight on that side anyways, and I have been having corner light issues. I need to thank Shadetree big time for the core support, saved the engine bay completely.

I just thought I'd share this with you guys. I am open to all insults as I feel I deserve them. When I get this car back on the road I will no longer take it for granted and drive like the stupid kid that I can be.

Glad it wasn't worse and you are ok, definitely looks fixable. Might need a suspension upgrade too!

The guys at Goodyear Racing out in California use to say that tires with grass stuck in them had been used for "chasing bunnies".

Glad the car remained upright - that's a good size ditch you were playing with!

I'm glad you or someone else didn't get hurt and the damage is fairly minor. I drove like an absolute maniac in my younger days. I have no idea how I survived. However, for about 15 years, I'm the guy in the right lane going the speed limit, but I'm still known as the crazy driver by my friends.

Havent you heard you want negative camber, not positive?

That sucks but looks easily fixable. Glad it wasnt worse - nice looking car!

I have a couple cornerlights that are a little cracked, they are yours for the cost of shipping. Glad to see nobody was hurt, and that the damage is pretty limited!

You're ok, that's the positive side.

The car needs to see a frame table without question. A corner hit like that tends to make everything shift. The bumper support is trash and the mounting bracket is definitely bent. With the hood open, check the cross measurements, hopefully it's less than 1/4".

^ Not even good lyrics, Lol!

Many of us were not very practiced with the laws of physics when young.

Puting everything right on that car will set the lesson for our young friend.
Took me forever, and 7 cars, to learn to always leave enough on the table to cover the variables over which I had no control. At some point on the road you realize your driving evolves to making everything dovetail smoothly for everyone.

I am very glad to have a patient father who took the time to drive me on country roads on gravel or Icy conditions to get a feel for how a car will react with less traction/loss of control. Learning to not over-correct has saved my bacon many times now.

Also, if that had been a poem, it would still be twice as good as some of the "Spoken word" I heard while in college, lol

No insults coming from us, your ok and that's what counts, now learn from this and carry on.

Thanks everyone for the support and reassurance that my car can actually recover from this. Yeah I was pretty lucky to walk away untouched. I have definitely learned my lesson from this, I will try to be a more mature, patient driver.
I will probably take those corner lights from you Will.
Gonna go look for aspires at pick a part places near me this week. Other than the rear beam is there anything I should try to pick up?
I really hope my wheels are ok!
