  • Rosie's Next Chapter

As promised, here is where I'll begin telling about Rosie's new life.

I flew down to Myrtle Beach and Jesse picked me up in Rosie. We had a two hour ride back to his house, with a restaurant interlude in between.

Jesse and his wife were great hosts and I wish I could have spent an extra day there to see more of Charleston, SC. Oh, but it stayed hothothot and hee-uuuuu-mid to boot! By the time Jesse and I had loaded the trailer up on Thursday I was soaking wet. It was nice to take a shower before leaving! Before doing so, I took Jesse and Rosie on a little trip around the neighborhood to get used to the trailer, with some backing up practice included. It was sad to say good-bye for me, and I think it was for Jesse as well. One of the reasons I had been impressed enough to buy Rosie was the amount of work done to her to fix her up for one of the grandsons. Things change, however! I will try to do justice to Jesse's work and care!

I had planned to stop by the Black Mountain area near Asheville, NC on the way back, but the museum had closed at 5pm and I passed by that town around 5:30pm I think. Right afterwards, a mint looking Rabbit GTi jumped on the road (which turned into Route 23 north) for awhile and that was probably the most "contemporary" car I saw on the way home.

I stayed in a motel that night, and briefly considered going back to Asheville and Black Mountain on Friday. My stepmother had died on July 10th, and I was lucky my Dad told me to go ahead with my trip, and I was lucky others in the family were with him while I was gone. He also told me to take an extra day if I wanted, but sleeping on it that night I decided to go on home. A separate trip to the Black Mountain College area is in the works later on.

I got home Friday around 5:00pm, leaving the trailer locked on the car overnight. The next day I took all the loaded parts up to my church and offloaded them with no problems.

The trailer is now locked up at home and Rosie had been fine.

Let's see if I can do a picture.

My plans for Rosie are pretty modest. I've been driving a Toyota Tacoma for the past year or so, and AquaMutt has her body close to terminally rusted out at the rear axle brackets. I'll drive Rosie for the rest of the good weather and go back to the truck for winter.

No way will I expose Rosie to salted roads and uninsured idiots in Toyota Tercels who run summer tires and skid through stop signs on snowy nights! What happened to Twinstiva won't happen to Rosie!

I have a set of RX7 wheels in 14 X 5.5" which should fit her, and new tires will be on their way as soon as I check the wheel fitment and straightness. Rosie's Yokohamas do okay, but I'll feel better on some 165/55-14s. I may try a seatbelt swap before fall, but we'll see. Either a B6 or a B6-ME are in her future, but not before next spring. So is an Aspire brake swap, although some Capri front hubs might be better and allow me to keep the ('86 to '88 ) RX7 wheels.

Since Rosie is not a mutt, I won't go crazy with a paint can or a bunch of artistic rivet work! I do have some touch up jobs to do, along with basic care and maybe some exhaust work.

I'm pretty happy to be back in a Festiva!

    Thanks Jesse!

Great story and ready to see the progress. Makes me wish I would've started a progress thread for my Festy (Brakefast).

You will need spacers in the rear for the 14x5.5 RX7 wheels if you are talking about the phone dials like these. I think 10mm is what I had.

And Karl was a great guest.. before we got started loading things up, he took me out for an early breakfast and also brought home breakfast in bed for my wife.
Yes hot and humid.. for the best weather, the time to come to explore the Charleston area is between late September and early June. If you stay at the beach, with that almost continuous ocean breeze, the entire year is a good time to visit..except when there is a big storm headed our way that is.

I used to live very close to 1990new (Jess) and got to see Rosie frequently. I also saw the car before Jess bought it. It was in absolutely miserable condition, especially with the sunroof having been leaking for who knows how long.

Anyways, Rosie is probably one of the most meticulously restored and repaired festiva of anyone on the forums. Anything that could be replaced was replaced and anything that could be cleaned was cleaned. You now have what is almost a factory new car!

I'm really glad to see that it went to someone who is a member and not a random person on Craigslist.

                  Thanks everyone!

And thanks Chris for the rear spacer info. I should be fitting and checking the wheels for straightness today when I get Rosie up off the ground to inspect the exhaust and undersides.

Two days ago I had new tires and wheels put on Rosie.

I just cleaned up my four RX7 Phone Dial wheels (14 X 5.5" with exact bolt pattern and centerbore for stock Festys) and had the Achilles Economists in 165/55-14 put on. No spacers needed in the rear!!

Got rid of the vibrations at 60 and over. Nice!

Need to install the new rewebbed seatbelts and do a tune up and oil change now.

That's so strange I needed spacers but you didn't.

What size tire were you running, Chris? Mine were 165/55-14. Offset on our wheels is supposed to be 45mm. It felt to me like there was at least 1/2" to 3/4" distance between the tire and the spring perch. I haven't looked yet to see any rubbing, but I haven't heard anything.

The same Achilles 165/55/14s. I might of had the camber kit installed.
