Regarding the similarity between the VW Golf/Rabbit and the Omni/Horizon, the Wiki link from page of this thread has a link to Allpar. I'll add it here:

There is a lot of info on the development of the Horizon from the Simca version of Chrysler Europe (associated somewhat with Peugeot). I always wondered back in the eighties why one of the British magazines I got (for the Vauxhall Chevette 2300HS) had a Simca that looked almost exactly like an Omni! Now I know!

The short version is that the Simca, looking almost exactly like the later Horizon, preceded the VW Rabbit. Then after the Rabbit came out in the U.S., the Horizon followed in the next decade.

And, sadly, here was my 1989 Aries 2 door as of a few weeks ago, before I signed her over to the guy who never finished the work many years ago:





I got the swiss cheese wheels with 195/60-15 Dunlops, the radiator, and a few other knickknacks out of her before she went to the recycler.

My dream was to have a 3.0 Mitsu V6 put in. Had the K-car, the V6 out of a minivan, and a four speed auto from that van. Then the mechanic got sick and never finished it.

I learned if you want something done, do it yourself. An expensive, sad lesson to learn. Looking back, I would've had a new 3 speed auto and a 2.5 put in instead.

On the bright side, I'm working on my own cars now. Ya'll know what kind! (If you need a hint it's bright red in the photos.)
