So while waiting for my pump and belts i started attacking the floor boards, i got a bigger problem than i thought i did

anyone else ever attack a problem like this?
i tried welding a patch in one small hole. Man, this is gonna be a problem. The under coating caught fire and the grage was filled with black smoke by the time i was gone welding up the one (2"x2") hole.
Should i just pop-rivet the pieces in?
