PopSci did a big writeup on touring the country in a Smartcar - http://www.time4.com/time4/microsite...artcar_p1.html
Color me underwhelmed. Take a Festiva, cut it in half and gain only 10mpg. This is what the future holds?

the guy that wrote that article seems pleased when he tells someone how he got 40 mpg. id be ashamed to drive something that small, and get that poor a mileage. just like we have talked about, remember the civic hf and the metro xfi that got better than that many moons ago. serves the big 3 right to lose money now.
the smart will appeal to the ones that follow the trends, oh wait thats most everyone isnt it  i wonder why they would market a us model that gets poorer mileage than the others. seems thats the entire point of the exercise, isnt it? be fun to drive one, but id rather have a yaris as a new car."We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." -Mohandas Gandhi

Wonder if I can bring one in from Canada without a lot of pain and suffering?

There are no diesels in 2007 models of any car or truck in the USA or Canada due to NOx restrictions. In 2008, the everyone will come out with a diesel engine that meets the requirements.

I believe Mercedes has something called BlueTech which a Deisel for 2007. It is about a $1000 option which is pretty reasonable for any Mercedes option - LOL. Probably one of the few options that would pay for itself. I'll also bet that VolksWagen has a Deisel or two out there in the market oplace also.
