  • Drive a Festiva to reduce global warming

    Hey guys,

I haven't posted on here in a little while, but thought this was and interesting and REALLY important reason to visit our little community. I watched An Inconvienient Truth (the movie that Al Gore made about global warming) and after I was done, went to the website climatecrisis.net and calculated my impact on the environment. By driving my 1990 Festiva with a manual, I put 2 less TONS of global warming carbon dioxide into the air every year as opposed to driving my 94 Mustang GT automatic.

We are helping the environment by driving, and keeping Festivas on the road. So if anyone ever asks you why you are driving that tiny outdated looking litte car, you can say "I'm saving the world"

Just something to think about guys. Feel free to chime in.

Yeah now if you can just convince other people to drive more fuel efficient cars, and convince the US government to demand better vehicles we might actually save our planet before we kill it.

I just watched that movie two days ago and it had a huge impact on me. I have always believed in global warming, but that movie was done really well. Also I am not one for politics, and I hate Al Gore, but he actually made a really good documentery.

I agree, my thing is why the hell hasn't safety and reduced weight gone hand in hand. People think 7000lbs vehicles are safe just because they're heavy but they die in them all the time. In a really bad crash, being in a big, heavy vehicle still results in death. If weight was a concern we would all have cars that got at least 60 mpg with plain old gas engines. Al Gore invented the internet, let's not forget. I should see his movie, but I've heard it's full of exaggerations. It is crazy that people being even semi-conscious could buy a modern vehicle that they mean to use every day to get to work/run errands that gets 12-15mpg and not think they're destroying the world.

yeah like you said if we can just get the US to start making more fuel efficiant cars then it would help alot.. its not hard.. i mean look chevy has there vette that can see 29 mpg... a VETTE come on ... if we can get a vette to see 22-29 mpg i know we can make the avg car atleast run 30-35 and still have the same performance..america is ranked i think it was last on fuel mpg... we had the lowest mpg... thats sad.. the super power of the world.. no wonder china is going to be the next super power.. beasue tehy already started think ahead.. and already there avg car getting close to 40mpg...and some seeing 50-55. not saying that will make the the next super power.. but you get what im saying.

same way in europe small cars are the norm. gas is higher there also. gas hogs just wouldnt sell there with the majority of people. its sad that gas has to rise for people to react. the usa has always been bigger must be better. giant hamburgers and biggy fries, to put in the 7000 pound suv.

It's not full of exaggerations in my opinion. He put cold hard evidence into the movie. Even for people that hate Al Gore, if he could make some significant progress in reversing the effects that we Americans have on the world, I would love to see him as president. There is no way in he#$ that he could be worse than Bush. I mean, even his movie can help you make better decisions for the environment it is a success. I think he said that China or Japan is currently making cars that are as efficient as cars that we are going to produce in 10 years. I mean come on. If they can do it we can too.

The next super power of the world???? Very funny. I could honestly care less about global warming. I'm sure it happens but not to the extreme extent that some people talk about. I do feel that Americans drive huge vehicles they don't need because they feel safer in them and the looks but that's about it. No one really needs a large SUV or truck if you don't use it for work or if you are always towing something. Besides the pollution factor many people don't think about the high maintenance cost that comes with owning a large vehicle. I myself like smaller cars. The largest I'd go would be a midsized car. Don't really need anything bigger than that.

Yeah we can do it, if we were in a a war that required it we could do it in no time. But like you said we will be there a few years after the japanese. The USA is a sick puppy when it comes to gasoholism, try getting your average soccer mom (even democratic ones) to drive a festiva instead of a 15mpg minivan, not going to happen.

In my 2,300 mile trip , I seen 5 festivas total , that includes 1 in Illinois , 2 in Kansas , 1 of those was Frestivas , and 2 in Colorado ??

I can't believe how may Pickup trucks I seen , duallies , gas and diesel , pulling big campers and fifth wheels .

I told my wife I cannot imagine how much that is costing them to travel with the price of gas

Don't get me wrong , I have nothing against having fun and vacationing , but that is why I drove my Festiva to CO. to save gas .

Some of these people I followed for 700 miles ,That has to be a arm and a leg to travel like that .

My Niece was going to let us take their new Escalade 405 hp., she says ot gets best 13.5 MPG on the highway , I said no thanks

Come on people .. buy up some Festivas and save the world .

We need more in Kansas and Colorado

That's why I'm ambivalent about high gas prices; on the one hand, they suck, but on the other, maybe they will make people wise up and stop with the land yacht thing...

as fast as people are still driving in their land yachts, i think gas will have to get much higher to see a change in behavior.

were most people in the big suv's etc you saw speeding, packrat? i dont know how they can afford it either. not everyone is rich.

and bonzo the chimp would be better than bush by the way

The speed limit is 75 , I was running 80 and 85 and up at times , and I was being passed by Suv's and 1-ton duallies pulling campers or 5th wheels , like there was no tomorrow .

I seen a 4X4 suburban in Colorado Sunday , and seen it again Monday in MO. almost to St.Louis , when they seem me again , they all started laughing .

With all that running around we did , what is the chance of seeing them again , I lost them in Kansas somewhere .
That was one of the people that I seen for 700 miles .

I can't even count how many times I have seen a Hummer, Escalade or other large SUV with only one person in it. It just shows how much our society takes for granted. They aren't driving them because they are "safer" they are driving them because they think they look cool in them. There are people out there that laugh at our little cars, but I say we should be laughing at them for driving the gas guzzlers. heheheh Hope you had a fun time on your trip Packrat:-)
