Okay so the mechanic calls me yesturday and asks if I have a haynes manual for the car because they can not figure out how to get the bearings back together, and they have used there biggest press..... Something tells me that the new bearings are going to fail in another 7 weeks like the last set. Just a rant about repairs.

So what are you going to do the 3rd time?
FMS will redo the fromt bearing, correctly!
Also appears to be another person who is experienced with doing the bearing replacement.

Given the problems people are having with the front hubs I'm going to ask specifically if the shop knows how to work on this hub before leaving my car with anybody to work on.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.

A parts person ordered what he thought was a rebuilt hub assembly for me and it turned out to be a 5 lug pattern hub for something!'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

Probably worth it too. I just went and got the yellow festiva back, went to hit the breaks when I got home and almost ran off the road. Looked under the car and they forgot to put the seal back on that holds the grease in the bearings..... nice... it is now back at the shop.

The best advice I can give is to repack the bearings often so you don't have to replace them.

You can get some new junk bearing if you are not careful. I got lucky and found a parts car with a recent steering knuckle rebuilt on it. New bearings and rotors.sigpic

o yeah...i've had waaaay too many bad experiences with mechanics and their lack of knowledge about those front bearings. In the past year ALL my repairs have been bearings. In the front I have gone through like 3 or 4 sets. The last set i had didnt even last a week. It seems however that the last mechanic i took it too noticed my problem right away...I HAD NO SPACERS...lol...go figure, the bearings were waaaay too tight, so they kept breaking. ANyways, those spacers are next to impossible to find, so the mechanic called up a few junkyards and asked around for hub assemblies...well, he got some hubs from the junkyard WITH spacers and my car has been nice and smooth (and the spindles arent heating up) ever since...
all i know is that i WANT the aspire swap...A LOT...lol
