That doesn't sound like a CV joint to me. Typically, a CV joint that is starting to go will only click when you are making a tight turn, and either accelerating or decelerating(not always though). They usually won't make noise when going straight unless they are extremely worn.

It really sounds like its coming from the hub. From what i can tell driveing & hanging my head out the window. We cant replicate it when its at a standstill so its hard to say.

      Bearing... They seemed ok..

I can make it make the noise in all gears if i mash the gas. It really makes the sound when you hit the gas. When your in the top end of 2nd if you hit the gas it nocks, if you get off the gas it stops, exct.

Also, i was going to replace the half shaft yesterday just for good measure but they were $130 and they were out of stock

If it was a CV , it would make the sound in all the gears , just not 2nd , and worse in a turn .

Mine started doing it , just in 1 gear ..(2nd) , then it went to 1st and then to 3rd , and was still quiet in 4th and 5th .

I had to have a complete master bearing kit put in the tranny .

It had a very similar knock .

Do you have any updates yet ?

Ok i tried it again up on the stands. I could make it make a faint knock once i had it up to fourth. But there wasnt anyone else around to help so i could go look to pin point it. packrat, did your car still make the knock when it was jacked up? Did it sound like it was coming from the drivers hub, or could you tell it was from the tranny. Because when i hang my head out ither window (ither driveing or as passenger) It really sounds like its the hub. I find it really odd that it was 100% fine before i did the swap, then soon as i pulled it out of the garage it was nocking. Also i can make it knock in gears 1-4 mostly under acceleration. (never tried 5th)

It was not as bad when jacked up , that makes the load less when it is up in the air , no strain on the tranny as for pulling the weight of the car .

The trans being on the drivers side would make it sound like the drivers side area .

Did it do it as soon as you drove it , or did you actually test it , then it started making noise ?

I am not totally saying it is the trans , but the bearings go quick once they are damaged , they are small and have a limited amount of abuse they will take .

I was so happy with mine when it was rebuilt 2 years ago .

            One more question ..

when the car is running , in neutral , clutch out .. can you hear any noise in the trans area from under the hood , rev it up a bit and listen .

I'm not sure what you mean? There was no noise before i did the swap (aside from a finished ball joint (pssgr) making noise on bumps) Then when i was finished the swap/ replacing the control arms, i took the car off the stands and dove straight out of the garage. It was knocking before i even made it onto the street.

Ok, no noise revving it in neutral. (I was looking under the hood pulling the throttle cable.

Im starting to think its the tranny The more i drive and listen the more i agree

However it makes its noise in every gear includeing 5th and reverse

The inspection is tomorrow. Ill let them diagnose it. If it is a blown tranny i dont think it will fail because its not on there checklist. If its the Bearings/CVs/at the hub then they will figure it out and ill have 2 days to fix it.

If it is the tranny how much further do you think it will go? Ideally i would like to drive out the farm to replace it where i have access to a hoist. (would need to get another 150 miles outta it)

Be easy as you can be , that is what I did , it got me several months .

I took off and almost immediately shifted into the next gears , The more I drove it the louder it got and the more the next gear made noise .

The bearings let the assy. move around in there when they get damaged , and that makes the noise .

                    Good luck

Ok, it passed the inspection today. So thats a major relief because i dont have to be scrambling trying to fix what they want on a deadline.

The mechanic thought it was the CV, but all the driving he did consisted of driving it into the garage. So he never witnessed the horiffic knocking. Technically it atchuley should have failed if its the CVs, but they let it slideee.

The strange thing is it barley knocked on the way home. But i was being super gentle on the tranny, double clutching and everything.

Ok, i just took it out on the hwy to make it work since its basically been sitting for 6 months. I put on about 20 miles.
Observations... I could barley get it up to 60mph. and at 60mph in 5th the engine/front then was kinda shakeing/vibrateing.
And it dosent seem very peppy. Also at idle i think i can hear a ticking coming from the tranny.

ok update. my friend's dad is an ex mechanic and we were looking it over.

after warming it up we noticed a ticking noise from the tranny. The ticking would stop when i pressed in the clutch. He thought it was my throwout bearing. (will get a vid of this noise)
Also, he thought maybe since my alignemt is out, with my toe setting being out that the wheel could be vibrateing in and out and since there is a 1/16" of play along the hlafshaft that it was making it hit back and fourth?

You said you changed the control arms. Did you put the aspire ones in or use new festiva control arms. They are different and as far as I know they shouldn't be changed unless the sway bar is also changed. The aspire control arms have a little different shape and are longer. I installed the aspire control arms on mine before I realized this and was having some funny noises. ( nothing as serious sounding as yours though) When I put Festiva control arms back on, I found that the driver side axle was part way out of the trans. ops:

That sounds as much like a bad CV as anything I've ever heard. Can't say for sure, or why, but that's exactly what it sounds like. BTW, get that alignment taken care of. You're going to need it.

I know.. i wanna say CV.. but it dosent make the sound in turns?!

I know, the alignment is on the list. I ordered new boots for my steering rack, so i want to replace those before i drop $80 on an alignment.
