      had a old jeep that was doing the same as yours.noise when not engaged got quite when pedal was pushed in. it was only the throw out bearing.

              That hollow clacking is the noise I'm talking about . . . notice the noise gets quieter once I get toward the front of the (belt side) motor.

              This motor sounds like a singer sewing machine normally.

                Doesn't sound like a throw out bearing. When the clutch pedal is not pressed, the throw out bearing isn't doing anything, it just sits there(but the transmission is spinning, even if in neutral). When you step on the clutch pedal, the throw out bearing contacts the pressure plate and then spins at whatever RPMs the engine is running at(and the transmission will wind down and quit spinning). If the throw out bearing is bad, you'll hear it whine when you have the clutch pressed, then it quits when you let off the clutch.

                I believe you have other transmission problems.

                  After asking around I think I'm going to change the trans fluid . . . have any of you switched to syth. or do you run lucas ? let me know whats worked for you . . . oh and how many quarts I need
