  • clutch cable bracket broken

    I have a 93 Festiva L, close to 600,000 miles, 2 door, with a manual trans.

Some months ago, I had to replace the clutch pedal itself, since the part that the cable attaches to had bent all out of whack! ( Only I can ruin a dang pedal!)

Now, the small bracket that the cable feeds through on its way to the pedal, that is attached to the much larger bracket that holds both the brake and clutch pedals, has bent and broken one if its welds, meaning the clutch will not engage.

I believe that I am going to try removing the large bracket that holds the pedals, break the small bracket off, grind down the broken welds, drill 4 small holes through both brackets, and re-attach with bolts/nuts.

Has anyone else run into this? How did you fix it? Is the pedal bracket as easy to remove as it appears? Suggestions?

I bought her brand spanking with less than 1 mile on her in 1993. I lived in daytona beach at the time. I now live in Chapel Thrill NC. I have delivered pizza and other food in her from day 1, literally, I picked her up in the middle of my shift on my break! I average about 50,000 miles a year, and I took a 2 year hiatus from delivery to do something stupid, ie manage a restaurant. I am on the 3rd odometer, so it does not read 500,000 plus, but I have kept track myself. I am shooting for a million miles before I do any mods to her. I would eventually like to convert her to battery power.
I would love to take pics, but my camera has been rushed off to Kodak, the LCD screen was broken, and I am praying it makes it back b4 Xmas! I am prepping for my repair solution as we speak, I have to work 2night!

i'm guessing by your description that the bracket circled in red is the one that broke. i think your solutiom should work but since manual trans festivas are in the majority in junkyards maybe you could get a good one there along with the some extra bushings and springs for future repairs needed say at 2 million miles.

              Well F3BZ

You would be correct, that is the piece that is broken, the welds are giving out. Jeez, only I could do that! I am about to go out and try it out, apparently, I am going to have to remove some, if not all, of the dashboard to get the brackets out. Once out, the rest should be a breeze. As far as the boneyards, the ones near me have NO baby cars, dag nab it, that and I am busted flat at this moment.........I have also been driving without a clutch tonight, oh what fun, but you CAN start the car in first, pressing the gas. As you approach 4000 rpm, let it out of one gear, and gently pull into the next gear, it should slip in around 3200 rpm.........

I would love to vid that as well, but, as stated in my last reply, I cannot...." I am on the 3rd odometer, so it does not read 500,000 plus, but I have kept track myself"

Thanx for the welcome! I deliver food at night, but I am also a mechanic, ie a mobile mechanicc, as found at www.mobilemechanixx.com. I have kept this little thing running forever cuz I love it, and wouldn't mind helping out when I can when others run into "unsolvable" problems!

Maxtiva, that is one hell of a ride!

FYI, if you know the actual milage, and you would like to see it correctly displayed, its really REALLY easy to adjust.

its hard to explain. but if you pull it apart you'll figure it out. Do you have any of the old broken clusters that you could practice on?

Once you get it all apart there is one main component that is attached to the back of the face. this is the spedo/odo all in one. The numbers are all separate discs, there is a keeper strip that keeps them in place. when you pop it off you can rearrange them.

Best bet it to practice on another cluster first. Unless the one you want to adjust is just a basic non tach cluster that you dont care too much about.

But all in all its preety basic. Its not like the cluster is filled with little gears that will all fall out if you open it up. Its fairly simple

Actually, the one I have now has a tach, got lucky at the bone yard in FL. I prolly shoulda kept those old clusters, but they didn't seem worth transporting over 800 miles...... I should get in there and dig around this holiday vacation. I may get back to you on how to do this again, but it doesn't sound to bad, THANX!
