Could be about a bazillion different things... You'll have to provide more detail, ie: what does "runnin like crap" mean, specifically?

did you deck the head before putting it on? if the head's warped, you're up the creek...

All rebuilts blow smoke for a while....my 1.3L '92L took over and hour of running to clear out adter a full rebuild.
Did you check your valve guides?
          Did you also do rings?

Anyone, does the 88 have the same timing mark probles as the later models?

            ????

I've NEVER had a rebuild blow more than a puff of blue smoke on start-up. At least, not my rebuilds...

If you blow smoke for that long after start-up, something's wrong...

I use alot of moly on coantact parts during a rebuild (old school), also spray everthing with WD40 after cleaning and crank the cylinders (no head) with 90W after honing... If you disconnect the pcv...it's like a fire extinguisher.

Yup, ol' skool. I was taught by a local dirt track engine builder from the 50's to the 70's. I also liberally use moly, don't use WD40, and coat the cylinders with 30wt. Sorry jg, but it sounds like you got the crosshatch wrong... maybe wrong grit or too steep?

The stones are to soft...i knoe that... the reason is...between the rings and cylindrs, I want the rings to win. But if the smoke goes away and don't burn oil...i'd bet the cross hatch is ok.
After puting the parts thru my own degreaser (2parts kero-1part 30WND-1 part Liquid Wrench) I take them to work and run them thru an utrasonicapor degreaser w/ TriChlor. If you don't spray them with something..they'll be oxidized by the time i get home.

ok, WD as a protectant after a bath, that makes sense.

did you plateau hone after finish honing?

it is white smoke and i guess it isnt really a rebuilt head just changed out a valve. it dosent idle well.

RE question about timing marks. Been a while since I changed the timing belt on my carb'd '89 but I didn't have any problems. Everything was as described in the Haynes manual. Hope that helps.

white smoke is coolant or water. Does the exhaust smell like coolant? Did you use a new headgasket? did you clean the block and head mating surfaces? did you scpare them with something sharp and gouge them? I guess you see where I'm headed....
