You didn't spill some coolant down in the exhaust pipe did you ..just a thought , I have done it , and it takes a while for it to burn out .

sorry, but you're pretty much down to a leaking headgasket, or a cracked block or head.

No to the plateau...though that is the best thing to do...that's what they do at the factory to Iron blocks and sleeves. I don't because it really requires a machine to oscillate properly (typically rotating opposite direction of the pre-hone) If you over do it, you might as well bore.

FB71 knows his S, great question, keep them comming!!!!!

One valve would necessarily be a bad new valve....why did you change the valve...makes me thing that if the valve was bad the guide might also be shot...though does not explain bad idle.

Smoke color is best diagnosed immediately after a cold start followed by some hi throttle...after the engine sits a while...any leaking system will ahve a chance to accumulate.

If its water or oil burning....you should see a decrease in the respective level.

Anyone...does the 88 use coolant as a pre-heater at the throttle like later models?

Rotate the distributor to see if that improves idle...if the idle improves...the timing belt is not correct. Make shure to marke the dist position before moving.

yeah, there's a coolent passage right below the carb flange on the intake that gets recirculated untill the t-stat opens. for easier cold starts and low temp driveability.

One more question, did you use the proper bolt tightening sequence when you put the head back on it?
