No offense, but a very much respected mechanic told me to keep trying, so, uh, I'm gonna.
I agree with Fresh. Brute force is NOT always the best method. You can remove the four nuts holding the spindle to the axle, disconnect the brake line and e-brake cable, and the entire assembly will come off. Then you can work on it away from the vehicle.

Also, I teach this stuff for a living, and did it for a long time, and I respectfully disagree with your mechanic friend.

The outer rim of the cage, (that's the face I guess), is gone. When I removed the washer, it fell out in my hand with the remains of the bars that connect the inner and outer rim of the cage. I can see all the rollers. They move around freely between the cone and race. The cone, however is stuck quite nicely on the spindle.

The only thing that could possibly be left of the cage is the inner rim. The axle nut would have had to have been put on too tightly, right? I mean, the cage doesn't usually get ground to nothing when the bearing goes out does it? And before the brake job, I didn't have a problem with this bearing. The problem was with the other one, and it's fine now.

So, if I can torch the cone until it glows, I should be able to knock it loose and pull it off. Thus saving the races, I hope.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

for the very few dollars the races cost, you would be best advised to replace them.

NEVER mix and match bearings after they have been installed...and never...change just one.

Sorry, should have clarified. I didn't change any bearings. The left side was the problem. Just got loose. Tightened it up and it is still fine. When the right side was repacked and reassembled, which I had no part of, something went wrong. I was just trying to figure out what.

Yes, I agree. It would be better to replace them. But, I don't have a job at the moment, so a few dollars is a bigger deal to me than to most. Tryin' the self-employment thing. I do however have spare bearings, a drum, and grease.

A cash flow hesitation will make a guy do some pretty crazy things. You know, like wiring two cars together and speeding off in one in the hopes that they will break apart in the way he wants them to.

Interesting development. My uncle "helped" me again.

Now I need a new drum, axle, backing plate, set of bearings, and a wheel cylinder. What can I say, that guy's a giver, and they're always ready in Advance. The staff in there love me, but probably think I'm an idiot.

For the record, just in case anyone's wondering, it's actually NOT a good idea to try and pry a drum off an axle. Who'd a thunk it?

Thanks everyone for the advice. Hope a laugh or two was gotten out of all this, because there sure hasn't been any progress so far.

That's kinda weird. Wouldn't it be just as easy to make a mech that squeezes 2 pads together as it would be to make one that pushes 2 shoes apart?

^^^ actually, what you described is rather common. Most rear disc calipers have a ratchet mechanism disigned to allow mechanical actuation of a piston inside a piston for the park brake. The "drum in hat" style has only been in application for about 15 years.

I know I am taking this back a bit, I just missed this earlier.. You are correct KZ, I musta had brain freeze. What I was talking about was when you go to a donor vehicle, and you want to remove the spindle to save a few bucks.....The spindle, where it bolts through, I seem to remember, the bolts cannot be turned, they have splines, and if you get them to turn, say with an air gun, you have ruined them.....dangit, I know I ain't crazy, but I am not being clear, and it has been 6 years since I did one.....
