  • 88 festiva L oil pan

my oil pan has a standard threaded drain plug as well as another hole that is plugged with a rubber stopper, mine wore out and ripped in half draining my oil onto the safeway parking lot. I assumed the rubber stopper was a hack job fix to a cross threaded drain plug but when I went to the junk yard for a new pan I found that they all had this same plug and were all worn and leaking. the part drawing at the ford and mazda dealerships do not show this hole or this part. I am currently using some random vacuum line part, it works but is leaking.
does anyone know what this hole is for, where I can find the correct plug
or if an oil pan from another engine will fit. I would like to get a used pan
because new they are close to $100

i will be picking up a wrecked but low milage 88 parts car this weekend and will be curious to see if it has the mystery plug you are talking about. any pan from a carbed festy should work as a replacement. the EFI motors have a baffled pan. not sure if that matters but if it does interfere with the crank or oil pick-up i would think it could be cut out.

I've never seen another plug other than the drain plug. I've had 15 festivas. And worked on another dozen.

              rubber plug

the junk yard I went to had three festivas of varying years ( not sure about the years but the same body style as my 88 ) all three at the yard, as well as my 88 had the same plug. although they were in slightly different locations.

above is a pic of the plug that I took from the yard. hopefully soon I will be able to post a pic of my oil pan so you can see hole location.

right after the plug on my car failed I crawled under a festiva that I saw parked on the side of the road and found that it had no plug.

The extra hole, and the plug, are added by the wrecking yard. During the prep process to get the car into the yard, they punch a hole in the pan to get the oil out. To ensure that the remaining oil doesn't drain all over the yard, they plug it.

...huh? I actually thought about that but I figured they would just use the drain plug so they could still sell the pan , I should have looked at some of the other cars in the yard.
I called the yard that I went to and the guy said that they do punch holes to drain fuel but that he didn't know about oil, that is the most logical theory yet. so maybe my car or oil pan was at one time in a wrecking yard.

more than likely, the entire engine came from a yard.
