  • Neutral saftey switch?? (attn; FB71)

Ok, i know there are two switches in the trans, one is obviously for the reverse lights... Now what is the other one? I thought i read it was a 5th gear switch.. for the emission system.. dumps the charcoal canister at cruising speed. Or is a neutral switch?

Please tell me its a neutral switch... that will make installing remote start sooo much easyier.

i can answer that one, NO. the switch you're looking for is above the clutch pedal.

that's correct.. there is no "nutral" switch on a manual Festy. what he needs to do is wire in a bypas on that inturupt switch so that his remote start can function properly.

4spd transaxles have three switches mounted to them; backup lamps, neutral gear, and top gear switches
5spd transaxles have two switches; backup lamps and neutral gear.

these are NOT the same as the cluth position switch, that one's mounted on the pedal.

the top gear switch on the 4spd prevents the 'shift' lamp from illuminating in 4th gear.

the neutral gear switch tells the PCM that there is no load on the engine.

^- i dont understand... when is the neutral switch activated? when the trans is in neutral? (that would be perfect!)

hey Jim, that's not how i understood that switch to work according to the factory manuals theory and opperation section. can you clarify any of this please? IIRC there's a switch that the PCM has to see before allowing EGR function, and i always thought it was that switch...

                stefan, bingo!

yes, both the clutch engage switch and neutral switch close a circuit to ground on pin V of C202, the blu/wht wire.

the clutch switch closes when the pedal is depressed, the neutral gear switch closes when the trans is in neutral.

Planning on adding a remote start, are we?

                  FestYboy,

EFI Festies don't have EGR, only the carbed ones do. That system monitors the top gear switch on the 4spds

also, to clarify, there are TWO switches on the clutch pedal.

One is the clutch engage switch, connected to the PCM

the second is the clutch interlock switch, connected to the starting system circuit

ahh i see, an as i only have carbed festies, i woudn't have known about the differance between the two (have an 88 factory manual) i just assumed that since my 88s and g/fs aspire both have EGR, so would the EFI festies. now i know, and KNOWING'S HALF THE BATTLE!!! YOOO GOE!

excellent.. excellent... EXCELLENT! Now i dont have to spend 100$ on a fancy DEI neutral safety module!

Now i need to figure out how this switch works... and how i can make my viper share the circuit.

I assume its a switched ground? grounded when in neutral or when in gear? hummm...

I think the viper has a wire that needs to be grounded when the trans is in neutral.. (to prevent starting in gear, wont remote start unless grounded)
Otherwise i need the module that uses the leaving the car ritual to make you leave it in neutral.. (makes you get out of the car with it still running then shut it off with the remote so it knows its in neutral since you left the car with it running.)

This is from an above post. C202 is one of the PCM connectors.
