  • Camshaft Question

I recently bought a 1989 L model.Less than a year ago some one put a fuel injected engine in it. They put all the carb, stuff on it, mech. fuel pump ect.Was replacing the valve cover gasket when i noticed it had the roller rocker assembly on the head. I don't think they made a hyd. camshaft with a fuel pump lobe on it. Do any of you all think the cam will last very long with the hyd. rollers , or should i go ahead and get a mech. rocker set and replace the roller rockers.

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

The rollers might destroy the cam. I think there was a thread on here a few years ago about that. Might want to check into it. I know in other engines that the cam will fail if using a non roller cam with roller rockers.

I knew that about other engines, just thought these overhead cam engines might be different. thanks for the replies.

I have roller rockers and a cam out of a 95 aspire but I dont remember about if it had lobe for the fuel pump.If the installed the whole long block I would be more worried about what the fuel pump was ridingon. You said its been about ayear I would think in either case it would not take long to self destruct.I have a 93 fuel injected

My '89 LX has the exact same setup. I've been driving it like that for about a year and haven't noticed any problems. I would like to put an Aspire cam back in mine since the hydraulic lifters are so quiet. You could possibly have a fuel pump cam lobe machined into the Aspire cam, or get an electric fuel pump. The original engine I had ticked horribly and the new one purrs like a kitten even with the wrong cam. I think they moved on to hydraulic lash adjusters for good reason but thats just my opinion. Even if the cam got torn up you could replace all of it easily.

I just looked at the book and '90 and later festivas have roller rockers and they do still have the fuel pump lobe(I have a '90 cam I've been thinking about installing). Maybe that would work better. I know for a fact that no Aspire cams have fuel pump lobes.

My 93 did not have roller rockers that is why I went with the Aspire roller set up

i just pulled the valve cover off my parts festiva a 1990 and it has the fuel pump lobe on it.it's just a tad wider but it does have it,so i guess i'm good to go.

thanks to everyone who responded,it really took a load off mind, what little bit of it i have left.
                  just wanted to make sure.
