Were they new, or remanned? Hate to say it, but I have gotten, more than once, "remanned" axles that weren't very remanned, and ended up going bad. Just last November, replaced both in my baby car, and the drivers side seized up like 4 days later, stranding me for only the 2nd time on 14 years with my festy. I do mean seized, as in would not roll an inch!

While my inner tie rod end is bad, I have almost 600k on my car, of very very hard driving, and I hit a curb REAL hard a couple of months ago dodging a jackhole in a suv.....freaking gas guzzling SOB.....but as I understand it, they are not a common problem in the festy, especially if the boot is good.......

Also, I have had the same noise for years. Where the lower control arm bolts into the body of the car, I have a bolt that will NOT screw down tight, and will NOT come any looser, either. It does make a sound similar to what you are describing, so possibly the ball joint on the end of the control arm may be bad.

Not on the festiva.. as far as i know the thread that goes into the rack is m22 1.5 I am not sure that is exactly right but I do know it is the same on all the festivas.

                      The ford listing for 93
                      e8bz-3280-a 17mm fine thread
                      Fobz-3280-b 15.8mm coarse thread
also a listing for a fobz-3280-a with no listing of thread size but the parts guy seems to remember it is the replacement part number for the e8bz-3280-a
