thats what i figured, how would i replace with a new belt, cant i just put it on a certain way?
I don't want to misspeak and lead you to make a bad move. It's been a while since I worked on those engines so I'd either wait for the veterans here to step in or get a manual with the replacement procedure.
Well, IF you are going to use the old belt, marking can help, it keeps the belt in a groove that it is "used" to.
I think Jglutz? once said he will transfer the marks to the new one to help get the timing right with a little more ease, ie, it is easier to see marks you made than leaning over to see them.
A paint pen, white for me, works GREAT for this. I think testor still makes them.
The haynes manual should be a pretty straightforward guide. However, sometimes it is tough to get the flywheel to gold still to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt with a screwdriver going through the "starter hole" as I call it.
Me, I have used a chain wrench. In another thread was a suggestion I want to try, it seems to have worked. Anybody jump in if I get this wrong......
Have a friend get in the car, put it in 4th gear, and step on the brakes. This should keep the motor from rotatinf while you remove the bolt.
Anymore, I use an impact gun, but if you don't have one.....Aren't you using stanley tools? I seem to remember a thread where you bought a set.

Oh, you don't need to mark the alt belt, just slip it on.
The TB, you mark it in relation to the camshaft sprocket, and the crankshaft sprocket. Sorry no pics.
When you remove the crankshaft pulley, mark the sprocket, and the belt. DO the same with the camshaft sprocket. Transfer the marks to the new belt by lining the old and new ones up. The main thing is that the crank and cam MUST be properly aligned, with the belt on, or your car will not run/will not run right.
With a new belt, the haynes manual tells pretty well how to make sure all is lined up......Marking would be for convenience, not completely needed.

alternator belt replacement 14mm long bolt under the alternator with the head facing the engine on fuel injected models and 10mm on top on adjusting bracket.
