before removing water pump pully bolts it helps to grab the alternator pully and pull strait up hard and break the water pump pully bolts loose. it keeps the pully from spinning while breaking the bolts loose.

got the alt belt off and the crank pully.

my dang timing cover fell apart( is it needed?) but my problem now is getting off the lower pully, how can you pull it off no way to get even a small screwdriver in

To be honest, just replace the timing belt. It will save you from having to go in there again prematurely. Its not even that expensive.

The lower pulley is the crankshaft, the one on top is the camshaft. You have to get the crankshaft pulley off to get the bottom cover off. That is really the toughest part of the job, and it does not have to be too difficult, are you following the haynes manual?

yes i am, everything else seems common sense.

i pulled the undercover of the car to get to the crankshaft.

                keeps spinning on me.

Did you remove the large nut in the center? Clearance, hmmmm, does it have a splash shield behind the psgr tire you can remove for clearance, I THINK I had one, and left it off....

Ahhh, you need to immoblize the engine somehow, I thought I read putting in in 4th and mashing the brakes worked....anyone?
I USED to put a chain wrench around the pulley, a strap wrench might hold it. Haynes recomends pulling the starter and wedging a flathead screwdriver, wrapped in tape, into the flywheel. I could never get it to hold for me, though.
IF you can get ahold of an impact gun, a good one will zip it right off.....

an adjustable wrench will probably strip it.......
Put some extra, errrr, butt into it.
Get a ratchet handle on it, or wrench, whatever, then, get another nice BIG wrench. Put the box end over the bolt, with the open end facing down, then slip the box end of the BIG wrench over the open end. This makes what you are pushing on longer, get it? Longer means more leverage. This amplifies the torque you can achieve. Think more moment arm.....
Ideally, a long breaker bar, the longer the better, to break it loose....
                                Hope that helps
