  • Valve Stem Seals

Intake and Exhaust Seals are suposed to be diffrent, right? Because I have two packs of 4 and I cant tell which is which

Are they different....I would say not by dimension...the difference in valve stem diameter is about o.oo1o inches.

If the rubber is not different colors they are the same. Sometimes the elastomers are red and black. Red is silicone (hi temp) for the exhaust and black is buna-n for the intake.

If they are not labled in the package they should be interchangable.

I will run out to the garge later to see if I saved any....Click and Clack are on NOVA now....sorry...you'll have to wait until it's over...9PM EST.

There are two packs. They both have red rubber, and both packs are labeled VSSMA9 - VITON

Viton is really good....I'm not aware of any better elastomer.
Here's a pick...under close inspection, they appear to all be the same...if they were different, I would have saved them separately.
Don't ask me why I save these things...typically I look at or take my old parts when buying new to make sure they match.

Most after market kits are the same for exhaust/intake, the ones for the B6 i did were the same, and on the toyota engine i re-built they were the same. In the manual for both it said "factory seals may be different colors but after market seals are usually the same and are interchangeable".

btw joe... i still have the valve seals, rings, etc from the B6 i did a year ago... why, i have no idea. i should toss them out!

if its not together yet, you could do a little polishing that exhaust side..

Stefan seing the virgin head here's a little rebuiling trick....

Complete the engine less head...add all but one quart of oil.

Connect and run the starter to crank the engine until oil comes out of the block thru the port(s) to the head. A second or two after it bubbles out of the port(s) it will squirt to the ceiling, be carefull.

Install the head and pour the last quart of oil all over the valve trane before the valve cover is installed

                            Primed and ready to go.

Yea, I heard that before.. I guess using the starter would require attaching the block to the trans.. And theres that thing with the spyder gears... not sure if it would be a good idea to spin the trans w/o the axles in?

The way I heard it before was to use a big drill to turn it over
