Joe, whats the advantage of doing it that way over assembling the whole engine block + head, installing, leaving the coil wire off and then cranking it till the oil pressure light goes out?
Oil would still be added during assembly so that the entire internal surfaces have at least a slight coating... just wondering.

        Great question....
Without the head.....no compresion loads on the cylinders/rings until the crank, con rods and wrist pins are primed. I usually paint the cylinders with 90W until primed then wipe it out.

Also, much better feeling seeing the oil flow before the block is droped in place.

Most oil lights come on when pressure is dangerously low...conversely...when they go out....the pressure is just at or above dangerously low.

On an engine I'm heavily invested in...I'll crank with an oil pressure gauge installed before completing installation.

Is this necessary....no...is it better than not....yes.

I have an old 1/2 inch socket extension that i have cut the bell off (female end). i put that in the drill with the proper socket to mate to the front end of the crank.

skeeter....sorry to previously not acknowledge you comment regaurding the use of lube during reassembly....I do the same and believe this is way more important and valuable than the oil priming. Thanks for mentioning that.

harbor freight has adapters (set of 3, 1/8 1/4 1/2") for like $2 so that you can use sockets in a drill, i'm sure you can find a similar set near you.

alternatively i'm sure an impact wrench should work quite well too.
