Axle Help!

Hi, I went to replace my axles today, everything seemed to come off of the car without a hitch. But when i went to reinstall the axle on the passenger side of the car it does not want to go back into the transmission. With a few taps it goes in a little ways, but will not seat inside of the transmission. Any ideas? The car is a 1991 Festiva w/ 5 speed manual transmission. The car is in neutral now but when i removed the axle it was in first gear (i did not know it was supposed to be in neutral), could this be a problem? Thanks -Conor

Did you remove one, replace then remove the other? Or take both ut at once?
