I was driving last night and all of a sudden started hearing a noise. It sounded like high-frequency rattling or like when something spinning fast is occassionally making contact with something stationary (this is what concerns me the most; I immediately thought of the flywheel). At the same time, I noticed that the shifting got very sloppy. Sometimes it was hard to shift and other times, it shifted but felt like the stick wasn't all the way in gear.
The rattling/contact noise is connected. If I put pressure anywhere (e.g. down, forward) on the stick, it reduces the noise. For the most part, it's not very loud. If I were listening to the radio (which is out right now), I probably wouldn't hear it. It intermittently goes away but is on most of the time. The engine isn't suffering and there's no discernable difference in performance or sound. Acceleration is fine. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car other than that.
I've got other things I need to fix on it and I'm afraid it might be indicative of an upcoming problem - something I really can't afford right now in time or money. The car is a 1988 Festiva L w/120K on it.
