  • Car died while going down the road

I have a stock 93 5 speed. Around 11 today as I was going from one plant to the other, I got about half a mile and the car died. Check engine light was on when it died - Just lost power like the switch was turn off. I had just enough time to pull the distributor cap. Rotor was turning. (I was by myself so I could not check for spark or fuel (besides I had to hoof it down the road to get to a noon meeting)).
Question is - Has this happened to anyone else? Seems almost like either the ignition module or fuel pump. Can anybody tell me where the fuel pump relay is? Car was running very healthy up til now. I did notice a stumble this morning driving into work, but it didn't stall ???? Also when I pulled into my parking space this morning it seem to die - but then re-started later fine when I went to go to the other plant. All it is doing now is cranking?? Where is the ignition module located on this particular car? When I go back after work I want to be able to check it further any your information you can give me should help

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and help.

Dan's correct, the ignitor is next to the coil just behind the driver's strut tower. But, it still could be a number of things. Main and Fuel Pump relays are behind the dash, driver's side kick panel, up near the side defrost duct. Pain in the butt to get to.

O K Iwent there and it started right up. My co-worker was showing me a way home where I didn't have to go on a highway and it died again about a mile later. Check and there was no spark. I pulled the ignitor and will hit the Pick and Pull tomorrow. Could it be anything other than this little ignitor device? Anything else I should pick up at the junk yard?

When my car was doing this before it completely died it turned out to be the module in the dist. Whenever it got hot it would die, them finally died completely.

that's actually what I was thinking. Its rare for the ignitor to drop out, but the dizzy module is common for failure.

Sounds like I should get a distributor also. Since Festivas are kind of rare around here, what other distributors are equivalent to this one?

Crazy Ray's in Ft Smallwood has a blue one right now, and EZ Pickin's in Chase has two red ones. Also, I have a spare dizzy if you want to try it.

Ft smallwood is pretty close to where I work. Is that one a fuel injected model?
Jim, does what I described sound like the ignitor or distributor?

FB71 you are the man! Went back this morning and still no fire. Went to Crazy Ray's and found the junk Festiva right where you said it would be. Pulled the dizzy and the iggy (ignitor). (Even pulled the pisser bttle and pump). Came back and changed the iggy first and no fire. Then changed the dizzy and it fired right-up. Let it run for about 5 minutes and it is back to normal. Only costed $34. Not even a tank of gas - LOL
Jim - I owe you one. Brian, thank you also - it was the dizzy.
