  • Opinions on my clutch , with pics.

Just removed my old clutch.Did I need a new one ?J/K...I believe it is original , what do you think ? I have pics. of my flywheel.I really don't want to go and have it machined. What do you think ?Also, the bearing in the center of the flywheel is tight ,in my opinion. What else ??? Check out the pics. Thanks.

While it's staring at you, take the flywheel off and have it turned. Re-install with new bolts. Some will tell you that you don't need new bolts. Those are the people whose flywheel never flew off during a power shift.

to me that doesn't look bad, you "could" get away with not having it machined, but it's best to do it while it's apart and while your installing a new clutch

and i've re-used my flywheel bolts several times, i've re-installed quite a few different clutches always re-using the flywheel bolts, and since i've always torqued them properly, i've never had a problem with bolts coming loose

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

The Flywheel looks realy good. What determines the necessity to have it machined is heat damage. Heat damage will show up as 1st) blueing of the steel and 2nd) heat checking. Heat checking is radial cracks in the surface cuased by all of the excessive heating then cooling.

If your not to sure if you have cracks. Give it a quick shot of spray paint and sand it off. The paint will remain in the cracks provided you use thin paint and fine paper.

Sanding the flywheel....never a bad idea to brak the glaze.

I have re-used flywheel bolts once. The flywheel flew off on the first good shift I tried. It makes a BIG, HUGE bang when it comes off (go ahead, ask me how I know). It also does terrible things to your bell housing, brand new clutch, pressure plate, T.O. bearing, etc.

Now, anytime I take the flywheel off, NEW bolts go on. But that's just me I guess.

umm i would check with ford or mazda last resort would be a hard ware store for the pressure plate bolts. i have always put new bolts on ive heard whorer stories from people reusing them figure it as a 15 insurance policy. doing a clutch can be a little involved but do it once and do it right. this way you wont have to worry about it for a another 50-100k. i would recomed resurfacing or replacing the flywheel i dont think there much maybe 100 bucks from autozone

rock auto has flywheels for 52 starting not bad it is probably a little more then haveing it resurfaced. if there are no cracks and its with in the spec tolerance then just have it resurfaced

You are wasting your money if you spend it to resurface that flywheel. There's nothing wrong with it as that I can see. You could knock any glaze off that might be on it. You should check the pilot bearing and see if it still has lube in it.

If you had smooth clutch engagement with the old clutch, that just confirms it.

52 dollars might be cheaper than having it resurfaced. to resurface my capri flywheel is about $70 because of the raised mounting area it takes a lot more time to do. and we all know time=money. while the tranny is off either have it resurfaced or replace.
