Getting back to the first part of this thread, I have had good luck using a SawsAll to cut off the eye first, then I cut the eye in half etc as stated before. I have had to do this on all my cars...... except Shtinky...... Lazyiness, plain and simple.
This is no fun job, and will require some time to complete, along with a couple of blades.
I have done 4 now, and dread #5!

Ok, great and thanks for all the advice. That worked fine. I rebuilt the entire front end and new drums on rear. Used lots of antisieze as one of you suggested. I am having a bit of difficulting compressing the springs. The long threaded bolt or rod for the compressor thing is too long and hits the inside top of the fender well. Got a bit of advice on this? I'm also looking for the best and easiest carpet and seet covers. I really appreciate all of you and your advice.Jeff of Tannery Creek

Last month I went to Piston Ring and bought 2 festiva front struts, and 2 festiva rear struts... Then because I had the exact same problem as the original poster... I took it to an auto shop and got them to change the struts...
more often than not I don't know what I'm talking about... but my piston ring receipt leads me to believe they're struts instead of shocks...

The factory service manual refers to the rear shocks as being "MacPherson Struts". They look more like coil-over shocks to me. If the Festys had independent rear suspension, and used the strut in place of a top control arm, then it'd be a true strut. But hey, what do I know?'88 Festiva L, stock carby engine (with exhaust upgrade), 4 speed tranny. Aspire Struts and Springs, Capri 14" wheels, interior gutted, battery in back

Other cars use this same design rear strut. The VW Rabbit for sure, and I think the Dodge Omni/Horizon. They're called MacPherson struts in all these applications.
But they're not MacPherson struts, not according to Wikipedia and Motortrend.
The MacPherson strut was first used on European Fords starting in 1949. The design came from an Italian dude in 1929. I can't remember the Italian dude's name, and I don't how MacPherson acquired the design. Remember that WWII was going on, so maybe international pattens weren't honored.
Ford Motor Company bought the design from MacPherson. The specific feature that distinguishes the MacPherson is the pivot action that allows the wheels to be steered. Non-steering struts are called Chapman struts as long as they serve as suspension anchor points and locate the wheel.
So far I haven't found any information about our hybrid coil-over struts. I'm thinking about naming them after myself, unless someone else objects'88 Festiva L, stock carby engine (with exhaust upgrade), 4 speed tranny. Aspire Struts and Springs, Capri 14" wheels, interior gutted, battery in back

Alright kids, don't make me pull this car over. lol. Shock-strut-who cares?? As chills put it, it the springy thing that keeps the tire from crashing into the fender well. Good enough for me.
To the original poster, did that work, have you gotten them changed yet? I must have gotten really lucky with mine. They were not changed for at least the ten years that I had the car, and they came off without a fight.

this why i like salt free states, much easier to work on stuff, rust is what killed two of my festiva, and near as i have been abelto gather it siezed up the bias valve on my first one and wouldnt allow enough fluid to flow for the brakes to work, i had a dodge shadow with both bolts rusted solid to the shock, took 6 hours with a sawsall hammer chisel and a 4 inch grinder to get it apart, one bolt was an oddball length and size, and i ended up using something "close", hence the car was named clunker, since thats what it did with every motion.is not sposed ta do that...

rear suspension
i am putting monroe part number 71225 shock absorber/strut on a 1991 ford festiva.
my question is how can you use a torque wrench on the top nut without the shaft turning?
the only way i can see to do this is to not use a torque wrench, but instead use a wrench on the nut and a wrench on the squared top of the shaft to keep it from turning while guessing at the torque.
any comments?
