That's how I do it on other shocks.

Okay I went and looked at my Festiva. The rubber donuts on the rear struts have a 3/8 inch 'compressed height'. The fronts don't appear to compress rubber.

I'll look in my manuals, and get back to ya.

The FSM and Haynes both say just to torque them using a regular socket. I guess rotating the rod a little doesn't cause any harm.

Do you need the torque specs?

Did you get the Monroe install kits? Are they worth the money?

When I used to work at the Toyota dealership, we'd keep the shaft from turning by wrapping the rod with a rag and then clamp on some vise grips. The guys used an impact gun to screw the bolt, but I'd go with a wrench since most struts manufacturer don't recommend using an impact gun.
The left lane? Are you crazy!!! I never drive in the left lane...It's full of freaks driving the wrong way and charging right at you!!!

and this half-witted reply trying to prove the the opinion above:

besides the weight of the car needed to set the spring and strut in place???????

DAMN, I have to wonder: do cars travel on pavement in your world???

and since they are only shocks, like under any given truck, take them out and drive around in your new springy ride

awwww damn, i seem to be unsubscribed to the arena:p:p:p:p

            and by the way:

vise grips and a impact to remove

            and

either a 5 - 7 mm wrench or an allen wrench (depending on which strut you buy
            and
using the pass-through socket wrench to install (with the rear of the car in the air)

              Hey mechanicaldj...

What kind of damage would occur to the struts if someone rotated the piston rod. I don't mean spin it with an impact, just say a couple of rotations?

i have seen what happens sometimes when you spin it with an impact.

the rod will unscrew itself and pop out, but a few turns should be fine about 10 360's
