  • Heater part function

    Guys,

I'm in the process of replacing my heater core for the winter. I have everything out of the dash.. I was looking into the main vent (upper part) from the back side that blows into the passenger cabin just above the temperature control level.

From the back, there were two bundled coils of thin wire that look like they were temperature sensors of some sort. Kinda looked like the coils inside of a hair dryer, but much thinner.

Either way, they were in a tangled up mess, and since they were supposed to be in a tight bundle, like inside the hair dryer, I just ripped those sob's out.

I would like to know what they did, if anything and if they will at all affect my heater's operation. It is a 93 Festiva L.

    Thanks

My guess is that your looking at the blower motor speed control resistor(s)

One of these ? If your blower motor works at all you may only have one speed now. Not sure. Its not good to rip things out, they all serve a purpose, except for the fifth gear switches on cars w/o shift lights.

        Freshtiva,

It was similar to the coil at the bottom of your picture (thanks) but thinner in gauge and was located in the airstream of the vent right below the top of the dash board inside the center vents.

I'll see what happens when I get home Wednesday since I am away, otherwise I would have taken pictures also.

Thanks so far.. please let me know if you have any other ideas.

^^very common that the resistors are in the air stream....the air from the fan cools them off. I don't think I have ever seen a series resitor fan circuit where the resistors were not in the air stream.

Thanks - Ohh well.. they were already jumbled up, kinked, twisted, and seemingly incapable of proper function so i ripped 'em out.. we'll see tomorrow if the fan still works and if it has more than one speed.

            Thanks Again Guys
