You can, in a pinch, but I would change them as soon as you can get some. Advance Auto Parts usually carries the nuts.http://www.cardomain.com/id/hawkdoc60

Yes they have the washer with the notch. They do not have a cotter pin hole because they are designed to have the flange of the nut notched down into the groove of the spindle shank.http://www.cardomain.com/id/hawkdoc60

I went for spindle nuts earlier.
AZ had none, but could get them by the 10th. Cost: $11.00 each.
I then went to Advance. They had both in stock. Cost: $4.00 each! Yea!
My RR wheel's back on and I test drive it and check bearing play tomorrow.
No, I didn't follow the shop manual. I did it like I do my bike wheels.
How do you all do your tightening of the rear nuts?

When did they change to the cotter key style? Our 93 has them but the 89 has the pound into the groove type nuts. Can you drill a hole through the early spindle and convert to the later style? Is that someone there ??? 1981 VW diesel pickup---1988.5 Suzuki Samurai tin top---1993 Festiva---1974 Bricklin SV-1 ( very thirsty basket case)---2003 Tracker(bells and whistles)

I had mentioned a year ago or so , that I wanted to try to drill the spindle , and use a cotter pin , instead of the crush nut .
I think 93 and maybe some 92's had the cotter pin .
Anyone had success drilling a cotter pin hole ?------------------------------------------------

^^I would only consider drilling the spindle if I could locate castle nuts with the same thread. I know some models have this type of design....my '92 does not...and I'm not sure of the thread size and pitch.
If I did come accross nuts....I would pull the spindles and drill them off of the car....the spindles have a temper...probalbly pretty hard...it would require the use of a really good drill bit and no room for mistake.Joe Lutz
