  • Oil leak

I'm having trouble with a leak at the engine oil drain plug on a 93 Festiva. The original washer/gasket was badly deformed and I tried replacing it but I'm plagued by a persistent leak. I also tried teflon tape since the drain is almost like a pipe fitting but that merely slowed the leak somewhat. I've re tightened it several times, also to no avail. I haven't been able to find a replacement drain plug or a washer that fits correctly and am at a loss for what to try next. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i found a plug at oreillys. i went up to the counter and asked the guy about them. he went back there and found one. it didnt look like it would fit, but it did. doesnt leak anymore that i can tell (but i've got a bad crankshaft seal too, so its hard to tell).
89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

My replacement plug came with a nylon washer which works quite well. Nothing special, off the rack at Canadian Tire.

        Many thanks

Thanks for the info. I've actually got an O'Reileys a few blox from me so I'll check with them. I'm going to pull the plug today. Hopefully that will take care of the leak.

While the oil is drained....take some piece of flat stock and wrap it with some emery cloth....±220 grit...and sand/flatten the area on the pan where the plug mates. Use a coper washer under the head of the plug. Old copper washers and be sanded flat and re-used. Most parts stores sell new copper washers.
