  • Valve noise, lots of it.

Well things were going great. I took the car out on it's first drive with the new motor. No noise, working good. Now it has a bunch of loud clicking coming from the head. Man I'm bummed now.

did you pressurize the adjusters before install? Also I have had the rockers turn a little during install and then fall off to the side once started....had to go back redo them and took care of the problem.

Pressurize the adjusters? Never heard of it, how do I do it. I checked the valves and they are all there, so I haven't lost a retainer or anything. I added another quart of oil and it has shut up a little bit, but still a little noise at idle.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not but when I got the motor it was completely oil dry.

is this a new engine or a new to you engine? The trick with these cars is when you hear noise, go to a THINNER oil. this is against everything we've been taught by our fathers. I run the valvoline 75000miles 5w-30 and my car sounds brand new now. I've even toyed with the idea of putting the M1 0-30 in the car when it gets cooler as im only driving at night.

I have 10w-30 in it right now, so maybe a lighter oil needs to go in. This motor is new to me, it had 69,000 miles on it.

The hydraulic lifter/lash adjusters need to be pumped up....sometimes they will do it themselves but if I have had them out I have not had luck with it. You can take them between your thumb and forefinger and if you can squeeze them....I pump them up by putting them in a bowl of oil and squeeze in and out till you can not anymore. If you want there is a little hole that you can take a pin point and relieve the pressure in ones you can't squeeze and then it lets all the oil out when you do squeeze it....bad out and pump up with good. Has always worked for me....and if new lifters I do this also.

I didn't know to do mine when I installed my engine but they did quiet down after I drove it around for a while.

Alrighty, I wish I had known that before I put the motor in the car, but no harm no foul. They seem to have shut up now. If they keep doing it I will remove the valve train and prime them.

The engine came from me, V8Festiva. It has in the 60,000 mile range I think. Was in a wrecked car that was parked about two years. I removed it and had it in my shop . Plans were to install it in my daughter's car.

                      90s model engine.

I hope that KrayZFrameRate can get it firgured out and make it to the meet.

I have another one in a car running if he needs to do a swap while here.

At times most all my cars will start up clicking. I have found turn off quick and start again in a few seconds and the clicking will stop. Sometimes I may do this a couple times.

The yellow car I drove to Ohio sometimes clicks. But I would drive it anywhere and have.

                      Hope this helps.

^^OK I was thinking maybe it was a carbed engine with solid lifters ticking.

Got the motor from Dean with my car. I am not sure on the year of the motor, 90 and up I would assume as it is EFI.

this was actually a common problem with Festies and Aspires when they were NEW!

I can recall many unsold units sitting on the lot for months. Finally go to move or demo one, you had to hotshot it, and it would clatter like an out-of-adjustment sewing machine. We'd add a bottle of oil viscosity enhancer (STP, Motor Honey, etc.), run it at 2000rpm for about 10 minutes, and it would quiet right up.

10w30 is the right grade of oil for these things. Used to get a lot of festys in with rattles from people putting 20w50 in them. The lifters would get slightly noisy but a lot of the chatter was actually from the oil pump.
