  • Rear Alignment

Does the rear of the Festiva need to be aligned? I'm going to put new shocks and mounts on the back so I can out my new tires on. Also, would it be safe to drive this thing with the steering wheel shaking for about 30 miles? Or will it mess up all my new front end parts? Thanks!

        Just a note.
The rear doesn't generally need alignment, but can be aligned using shims.
Usually not necessary, unless it has been hit in the rear.
Just watch for odd tire wear in rear tires.

Well, I noticed the rear tires are kind of "choppy" looking. I figure its from the rear shocks being shot. Sound right?

yeah more then likely if you see choppy its cause the shocks are bad so replacing them would help a lot and probably where ur getting vibration from too, it doesn't technically need to be aligned, but might as well have them check the alignment on the rear too while they have it. I know at pepboys the machine they have checks the alignment of the whole car, so they would let u know, and when u get it done make sure that they show you the before and after specs

Correct about the "choppy", that too is my understanding.
However, I'm unsure of the mechanism that produces that pattern in the tire.

Alignment issues generally produce a complete removal of tread in a specific area!
Or at least accelerated wear in a localized area of the tire.

if you're seeing cupping of the rear tires, replace your rear wheel bearings, even if they look and feel OK. Trust me, been down this road several times before. Most of my customers didn't believe me at first either...

What if I just drive this thing to work the way it is? Its 75 miles round trip everyday. Will that start to put some wear on my new front end pieces? I can't save money to fix it when I keep having to put gas in the other car, ha

One more thing, how hard is it to do the rear wheel bearings? I've never done anything like that before. I've also never taken apart the front suspension of anything either, but that went pretty well, ha
