I hope those axle nuts were just threaded on there for the pics and that is why you didn't "stake" them down

I remember using my parents gravel driveway to work on my car in college... they are not fond memories to say the least! Nice job and under "adverse" conditions even.

      Hey Guys,
I know this is an old thread but I have new info. I am doing some bearings work today on another car and ran across this old thread that I honestly feel needs updated.

Follow zoe's advice when removing the lower balljoint. I had a piece of 2 or 3 inch angle iron about 5 or 6 feet long. Used it on 3 different cars now. Push it through from the front of the wheel well, over the top of the control arm, and under the sub frame, and push down. Works great.

Also, when removing the halfshaft, I recommend that you NOT use a slide hammer. Instead, take a pry bar and wedge it between the transaxle and the big part of the halfshaft. While gently prying, tap on the big part of the halfshaft with a hammer. It will pop right out.

Is that sarcasm Joe or professional because I hammered on the nut?

also you can tell using this method can take a long time....notice the rust on the rotor and the spider webs.

A mechanic friend of mine told me to use the hammer and strike the end of piece where the tie rod is mounted to sharply. I used that info to remove numerous tie rods without incident....but I have also done it the way Levitan has with great results.

never hit the nut. Hit the side of the spindle where the tie rod goes thru as GenevaDirt says above. A few good whacks and the tie rod will pop out.

I never hit the nut end either even screwed most of the way in, it can bugger up the threads for the force of impact.

Guilty as charged on whacking the threaded end of the tie rod. But only on ones that were bad and being changed anyway.
