  • Just a Bad day

so a few days ago i start to hear a clicking in my front end. sounds like a cv joint so i take it to my local shop just to get the cv joint replaced. he called me back a few hours later and it seems the cv joints are fine but my core support has rusted all the way through and now the only thing holding the front of the motor was the sway bar. i took it to a local body shop he says he can weld for just over 300 bucks. is this a common problem. do you think welding around it was a good idea.

well its not a common problem here in cali, but it also doesn't snow here so no salt on the roads, and we barley get that much rain. But i do know that rust is a pretty bad problem on festivas over on the right side of the country

It is a common problem here in the midwest. This happened to my car, so I took it to a mechanic and he charged me $80. I'll post a picture of what he did to mine.

Here are some pictures of what it looks like after he fixed it:

all he did was to take a steel beam about 2ft long and weld it to the frame rail, then he attached the motor/trans mount to it.

aggreed, that's a bogus job for $300, you got hosed. the core support is boxed for a reason, a steel strap won't last especially since the rust issue hasn't been addressed/fixed.

When I replaced my radiator recently, I noticed that mine was rusty too, although not quite that bad, but close. The rust has stopped advancing since I live here in SoCal, but it does worry me... and once I get back to PA it won't last long.

So how long can the sway bar mounts hold after supporting an engine? it's not like they would be holding the entire weight, since there is another support.

Also, does the engine have to be removed for this repair?
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

Michigan really sucks for rusty cars in my experience. Lots of back roads that are dirt or gravel instead of paved really takes its toll. My festy is an Ohio car as far as I know and its virtually rust free, except theres a small chunk of my rear subframe that is missing, very strangely. Ill be making sure to keep my car clean this winter though.
