So I was driving in backed up stop and go traffic today and I noticed my car getting very close to overheating. I just replaced the head gasket due to it overheating and blowing the gasket. Anyway, I pulled into a parking lot, popped the hood and it was definitely running hot. The fan wasn't on, and as far as I know, I've never seen/heard the fan come on. I searched on here and tried to figure it out myself but I'm kinda stumped. I know the fan works....when I got the car I noticed the fan was hooked up to run constantly, but i disconnected that and plugged it back into the correct plug. I read that if you unplug the wire running to the thermostat housing that the fan should come on, but mine doesn't. I also tried testing the relay, but I'm not sure I was doing it right or testing the right one. Either way, nothing happened on all accounts. I have the fan hooked back up the way it was when I got the car (constantly running when car is on), but I'd like to know what's wrong with it, and fix it the proper way. It's a 1990 EFi by the way.

fan switch. just go get one from a mcparts store. theres two temp sensors there, the one for the fan and the one for the temp guage. the fan one is the big one in the thermostat housing.89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

There's a temp sensor on the front bottom right of the cylinder head. Pull that connection off and see if the fan automatically comes on.---------------------------------------------------

Wes, I pulled the plug that you mentioned and nothing happened. When I pull the other one (on the thermostat housing), it will make a clicking sound, but still does nothing"Lane, I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. I'm no dummy."

The one on the housing is for the fan...if you disconnect it the fan should turn on....if it is not then it might be the fan. Did you try turning the fan by hand to make sure it is not froze up. I just recently had one freeze up with no warning at all."FLTG4LIFE" @FINALLEVEL , "PBH"

They guy I bought the car has it hooked up to two random wires he installed. One is grounded to the car, and if I plug the other one to the clear/white single connecter/plug by the driver's side firewall it runs. I dunno what I'm hooking it to, but it turns the fan on"Lane, I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. I'm no dummy."

so if you unplug it it clicks, but doesnt turn on. if you plug it to the random wires, it runs all the time. sounds right?
if thats what its doing, then there's got to be a relay somewhere between the switch and the fan thats bad somehow. i dunno why it would run when plugged to the other wire though...89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

Yeah, I don't really understand it. If I just touch the fan switch wires together it makes a clicking sound but the fan doesn't come on. When I plug it to the clear plug I described before, the fan will run constantly, but the car won't start. It's a mess!"Lane, I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. Oh yeah, that's what I was trying first. Unplug it...nothing. I was just messing with it again, and whatever I'm plugging that random wire to is just supplying power...I also touched the wire to the positive battery terminal and it turned the fan on. I'm thinking it might be a relay, but I don't know which one, or how to test it. I have a factory ford festiva manual, but it's not helping."Lane, I've been going to this high school for seven and a half years. I'm no dummy."

At this point I would've just installed a switch for myself to operate the fan, at least to test it out to make sure the fan is running."If you're not first you're last!" -Ricky Bobby
