  • Timing belt positioner

Im looking at the Haynes manual and figure 7.30 shows a Timing Belt Positioner. The problem I have is that my pulleys, spacers and positioner look nothing like that illistration. In fact it almost appears like the positioner is pressed on. I did try to pry on it a little, but didnt want to somehow damage it. I havent broken out the BFH yet, because again I dont want to damage it.
The Haynes manual also shows 2 additional screws that mine never had.
I only have a shop manual for 1990 (mines 93) I figured there wouldnt be a lot of difference. But it shows the same thing on page 21-05-13 #6 as the Haynes manual.
Does anyone else with a 93 have a pulley set up like this? If so, have you changed the timing belt and how did you get the positioner off?

The Haynes manual is the typical 88 - 97 Festiva and Aspire one.
Ive got 2 Haynes manuals and they both show it the same way. I Also dont see the key that they talk about and in fact none of the pulleys or spacers have keyways cut in them.

Probably should wait for someone more familiar before the BFH. When you remove the crankshaft bolt, can you see a keyway in the positioner? Somehow the crank sprocket would have to be removable.

I didnt even take the crankshaft bolt off. Everyone was saying you had to to get the pulleys off, but I was able to use a prybar on the motor mount and it moved enough to get the first pulley off. Everything else just slid right off then. At that point I didnt think Id need to worry about the crankshaft bolt. But maybe I DO have to take it off to get the positioner off.
And no I see no keyway in the positioner either.

The positioner does not have to be touched to remove the lower pulley or to remove the T-Belt. It should be loosened and slid back to ease in the installation of a new belt.

Not the tensioner guys the positioner. It is the last item on the crankshaft before the timing belt crankshaft sprocket. It has to come off before the timing belt can come off there is no room to get the belt off otherwise. It covers the area around the front of the timing belt and holds it in position on the bottom.

easy sqweezy, that positioner is held in place by the crank bolt. remove the bolt, then slide the positioner off. behind that is the key bar. once you get the positioner off, you're home free.

Crap! I was hoping that wasnt the answer. Oh well, at least it will be easier to get at with the pulleys out of the way.
                      Thanks FestYboy!

Do what Festyboy said. You have the engine with the "big nose" crankshaft which is usually only found on the '93 Festiva and some of the larger B series engines. Your pulley bolts to that heavy flange that you will have to remove to get to your timing belt. The other older Festiva engines don't have that heavy flange. Their pulleys bolt directly to the timing belt gear.
                        You gonna race that thing?

Yeah It sure does explain why none of the pictures in the books match what I was looking at. Ah well Time to read up on some of the tricks others have used to break that bolt free.

Yeah you have to take off the crank bolt to get it off. I have a '93 pulley on mine (Aspire engine) and it is exactly like that.
