Any tips for an automatic?

When I ttok mine off...MTX...I had left the sheave on...placed a strap wrench around the sheave and used a block of wood to prop the handle of the strap wrench. Put a breaker bar to the nut and it broke free with some effort.Joe Lutz

Monsoon, i take it you don't have air tools available?, or a compressor? that's about the only way to break autos free. i wouldn't recomend the starter idea due to the unknown strength of the starter and ring gear teeth. breaking either of those would suck the big one.
another option is slide a pry bar down the left side of the belt and carefuly wedge the tip in between the belt and oil pump housing. as you turn the crank CCW to remove the bolt, the pry bar should wedge itself in deeper and hopefuly deep enough to stop the crank from turning and allow you to turn the bolt loose with a breaker bar. though i'm not too sure this would work either.
in either case, i'm a bigger fan of the air tools idea.Trees aren't kind to me...

Every time I've done it I've had to take out the starter and stick a prybar in the flywheel. When I got my pulley out of the JY I loosened the flywheel cover and stuck a piece of metal in there and jammed it up. You probably don't want to bend your flywheel cover though. My impact wouldn't do it but a big one with lots of air probably would. Pain to take starter out of automatics.

Do you need or should you have a puller handy just in case? Just thought i would ask because we just picked up a 93 and the guy we got it from never had a belt put on it. And its got 145,000 miles on it. I'm not putting a mile on it until it's changed! OK thanks. One more quick question. When you replace a belt in cold weather and you put the tension on it will it need retensioned later? Yep, I went through exactly this with my 93. I jack the front of the car up, took the passenger tire and splash sheild off, put a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan, removed the motor mount bolts (3) and drop the engine down to the point I could get my impact wrench on it and let it ripped. Came right off. I didn't need a puller to remove the pulley holder piece from the crank - It came right off. All in all, it didn't take much longer than the earlier years. My biggest fight was loosening the Alternator - previous tightener was Superman. The adjustment bolt broke off and I lost an hour doing the drill and tap exercise - It is always the simple stuff that bites you- LOL!

Could an access hole be cut through the inner fender well so you wouldn't have to lower the engine to do this? It would only have to be big enough to allow a 1/2 in. drive extension to pass through, right? Then you could use a body plug to close the hole up.
