butterfly valve in the throttle body sticking? thats what it sounds like...
how often do you 'hammer it'? does it do it when you go easy on the throttle?

Try cleaning the throttle body with some carb cleaner.

Among the many things it could be, check the bellcrank / throttle cable at the carb, make sure the cable isn't kinked somewhere or routed weird to cause it to bind up, cable isn't rusted, have burrs/loose wire strands.

Every once in a while I get the car runinng along at 40 kph (35 mph) and push the pedal to the floor. The car should accellerate smoothly to 80 kph (50 mph). If not it's time for a tuneup, including carb cleaner.

Get some carb claner and clean all the linkage on the carb. Make sure it isn't binding anywhere.

we messed with it a little today and we think its some kind of vacuum soilnoid on the firewall.

ok, this is what i figured so far. Last night i disconnected the carb plugs and battery. Today it ran fine, go figure. So i took off the air cleaner, started it, let it warm up, idle down. I started spraying carb cleaner on the vacuum lines and found that the line at the back of the carb was sucking air. what I'm gonna try to do is replace the lines and try to find a new abcv valve.

this better fix it for good.
