  • Switch identification help

I was putting a tilt steering column in today and I ran across a switch I havent seen before. This is an automatic car so it may be tranny related. Never seen it on a five speed before. Its the small white box on the ignition switch. It has two wires going to it. One is a red with yellow tracer and the other is green. Inside the little white box in a contact point. When you turn the key a small plunger comes out of the ingintion switch and closes the contact point inside the little white box. Im switching this car over to a five speed so I wonder if I should use the igintion switch that came on the auto or use the ignition switch that is on the tilt column which came off a five speed. The ignition switch on the manual column does not have wires coming from the white box

Maybe it's for the shifter release solenoid?

Perhaps its the auto trans Park lockout connection??? Just guessing.

I think the lockout is done via a cable. Im not to familiar with auto stuff though. I know there is a cable running from the shifter to the ignition switch.

I haven't been into the guts of an auto tranny car, so it was a complete SWAG on my part! That must be the lockout cable you were referring to on the right hand dofr of the switch in his 1st photo.

I think that is correct Id like to lose the lock out cable for the tranny swap but it would be nice to keep the same ignition so the same key works the doors lock and the ignition.Guess if the cable is disconnect the switch will work like a manual switch ?

Really ? The switch is on my manual column but there are no wires coming from it. The switch is hard wired on the auto.

I know its there, I just changed the wiring on my 90 to keep the same key. And the car is a manual trans. I am pretty sure it has to do with the warning buzzer.(manual is out in the garage)

It would be a shame to lose the key buzzer I dont think any of my other festiva have a key buzzer. The car with tachs have the headlight buzzer but no key buzzers. How does that work? If the key is in the ingition and the door is open the buzzer sounds ?
