It wouldn't hurt to check the rears but I'm not saying absolutely that it's the problem.
I would think that if you lost your adjustment on the either of the rear brakes, what you're proposing could be part of the problem.

You said so your self, that this was an intermittent problem.
the caliper didn't bind in your single test.
That doesn't mean that it isn't the source of you problem.
Just that that time it didn't occur.
Hate for you to do a MC swap and still have the issue.
How many miles on the festiva.
I commonly replace the calipers every 100K miles along with the flex hoses.
I have never needed to replace a MC, yet!
      Just an observation.
I agree....the problem is still there.

Spongy.....air in one of wheel circuits....a bad M/C...the pedal goes right to the floor.

Still...check the rears cylinders for leaks....thic can cause symptons in the forn brakes.

i just bled them this am, all 4 corners in the proper order... what was interesting is the right rear seemed to have a bunch of bubbles... even after 10 pumps of the brakes...
so did that and now i have another problem:

The master cylinder where it attaches to the brake booster is leaking.. It wasn't doing this before, but now it is after my 4 corner brake bleed...???

I just posted this on another thread:

Master cylinders sometimes leak after using the pedal push method to bleed brakes. This is because you're stroking the cylinder piston inside the bore to a depth it hasn't been running in and that bore depth is sometimes filled with rust, scale and other contaminants. These things will get on the seal and eat it up or otherwise cause it to lose lip contact with the cylinder bore.

If it was mine, I'd take it apart and clean it with the intention of putting it back on the car afterwards. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I wouldn't tell you to do this because you may make an error in judgement and the results may not be good.

If I knew the master cylinder was an original, I wouldn't screw with cleaning it and trying to make it work, I'd go get a new one.

just replaced the Master cylinder (new) and all 4 brake hoses... and problem is cured!
I realized that my MC has been gradually failing as now my stopping power is much better than before.
