Your festiva will be fine (and a little lighter), after the AC is properly removed. I removed mine, and had no issues. In fact, Brian Mc took it in trade for a spoiler.
Which I still have not installed...two years later.
Just be patient, when removing the system, and you won't even have to cut any wires...
If you remove the system "nicely", you can re-sell it (or trade it off).

My '88L had A/C, and it noticeably robbed power when the compressor kicked on. For that reason, there's a switch on the gas pedal that cuts off the compressor when you floor it.
Not sure about the HP losses though, maybe someone could chime in with an exact number.White '89L auto - Sold!
