My alt. was loose after I was stuck in snow a while back.I raced it several times to try and get out.Anyway,it needed tightened after that.Now it whines.Not seemingly in a bad way,but,really,it sounds like a racing type of sound .Anything to worry about ?

Maybe too tight!
Can destroy you Alt bearings if you have it overly tight.
When was last time your ALT belt was replaced.
Note ALT belt also drives Coolant pump, a very necessary piece of equipment.
Lose you ALT belt and your car will over heat, with the attending great possibility of warping the head and blowing the head gasket.

I would think it is the alt., since he tightened the belt and the noise started. I have had that happen. If the belt gets a little wet it seems to me like it does not take long to go to crap. I have had this happen several times. After a couple squeels it is gone and tightening it has just lead to whining in my alt also."FLTG4LIFE" @FINALLEVEL , "PBH"
