  • Crank pulley

Well, I'm trying to take off the 4 10mm bolts to get the pulley off... how do I stop the pulley from moving when i'm taking the bolts out... I have the car in gear so I'm clueless

  • #2
i believe you get someone to hold the brakes, and if you need to turn the pulley you lightly hit the starter (take engine out of gear for this part)...

if you don't have someone else, you can impact them off...

if you don't have an impact then a swift hit with a wammer can do the job

Put it in 4th gear. Have somebody apply the brakes. Remove.

This educational moment has been provided by "The Don" of Midwest Festiva Inc to me and works every time.

For the four 10mm bolts, I just used my 19.2 volt Craftsman impact driver. If you don't have one, I belive putting the alternator and a/c belt back on will allow the pulley to stay stationary enough for you to break the four bolts loose.

A strap wrench around the pully will allow you to do it by yourself, as I often work.

DONT DO THIS!!!! If you like having fingers!!!
You can put a socket on the center bolt and then another on the 10mm bolt to break it loose. Or Levitan's idea works well also.

The four small bolts shouldnt be a problem. Are you talking about the outer(A/C) pulley ? Cant you just put a wrench on the big crank bolt to hold it while you loosen the small bolts ?

You guys must think I'm a child at this stuff...obviously you clear your hands/tools from the area. I have done it more than once and as long as you do it properly then there is no problem.

After re-reading your post I realize that you didnt mean to hold the wrench and crank the engine. No-one was saying anything about you being a child.

Ok, well I got the outer pulley off using the method that Levitan said(thanks!), and now i'm trying to take off the inner pulley and I'm having complications... does anyone have any tricks to this... i might be able to get ahold of an impact but its unlikely...

does the crank bolt have left handed threads possibly?

Nope... normal threads. As far as I know, the only left handed threads are on the passengers side rear axle nut.
