  • A/C Issues Help, Help, Help

This is a retro fit for our 88LX. We found a mostly complete a/c system in the jy and the interior is 100% complete. We were missing the condenser and a hose but now I'm confused... I'm wondering if the experts could chime in ant tell me what I'm missing. I tired to use my Festiva shop maunal but as luck would have it, the A/C pages I need are missing!

Anyway, here's the dilemma... We have the compressor mounted and we have recently acquired the condenser but we're confused about the hoses...

The first pic is the hard lines coming out of the evaporator inside the car.

2nd pic is compressor. Note the two small caps on the back of the unit. Not sure what they're for.

Compressor again- Note the small "nipple" at the lower part of the compressor. What's this for?

4th pic Note the cut line and a connection for another which I think is supposed to attache to the lower hard line of the evaporator via the silver hardline in the following pics.

5thAnother attachment on the condenser? Not sure what goes here.

6th All of the lines that I have minus the one that is currently attached (from the top hardline off the evaporator to the compressor.

7th These are the lines I got off the festy in the JY

8th These are the lines I got with the condenser. Notice that these are some sort of compression ends that must attach to a hole in the compressor and then be bolted to the compressor. I have no spots on my compressor for this to occur.

9th This is the condenser I've just purchased.

I am really stuck here and would appreciate any constructive input.
    TIA

Ok the basic setup goes like this..

Small port on the compressor to the condensor, condensor to the receiver dryer, receiver dryer to evap, evap to large port on the compressor... Make sure that the Receiver dryer is in the right direction too, there should be a IN stamped on it....

Any dramas just shoot me a pm

And I do this every day I run my own a/c business

Where do I get the line that goes from the small port on the compressor to the condenser? Mine was cut from car at JY- not by me... Can't seem to find proper line...

Also, I bought some new o-rings, r34 conversion adapters, and oil and freon. I guess I'll ask about them once I get the hoses i need...

Well, your AC parts are mixed up with dealer/aftermarket type and the factory type.

The AC compressor and receiver dryer cylinder are the dealer/aftermarket type...

The condensor are factory type so it don't match up quite well.

              FYI:
Dealer/aftermarket type AC kit ususally don't have condenser fan (The small round fan). But factory type AC kit from automatic festiva often it does have it.

So, will this compressor not work? Looks like it will.

What about the line from the compressor to the condensor. Where can I buy this???

Please tell me how to fix this mess...

Or is it the condenser that I have wrong?

I think everything will work if I have the proper line from the compressor to thte condenser.

Can anyone else chime in with info on the small caps on the back of the compressor and the "nipple" at the bottom of the back of the compressor? I am really at a loss here...

                      Looks like pressure relief valves.

I don't think those nipples do anything except sit there and look at you. Two lines on the compressor, one comin' and one goin'.

Kentucky is a big place but you can get those lines fabricated in New Albany, In. at Rinky Dinks. Just across the river from Louisville, Ky. If you're not close, check with a truck garage, tractor garage and ask them where they get their hoses custom made. You can purchase just the hard ends of the AC hoses in a variety of custom configurations and then have the hose crimped on.

I am looking into the repair kits. Pretty cheap. What is the size I am looking for? Does anyone have the dealer installed A/C they can take some pics of? I want to make sure I do this right...

                          TIA

                            AFTERMARKET air system

These are pictures of the aftermarket, not to be mistaken for the Dealer installed system, or the Factory system. These are a real pain to fill with the connections by the exhaust manifold. I have all three systems, but can't find the old pictures I have taken in the past. I can send you more of the Factory, and Dealer installed type if you need them though. I will just have to retake them. The small high pressure hard line you have goes to the factory installed system, and was different for FI cars because they had to reroute the line when they moved the washer reservoir to place the air intake system in its place, and the carb cars had a signal amplifier box on the wiring haness the FI car did not have. Dealer installed systems had all flex rubber lines, and the compressor mounted directly to the block with four bolts. Factory compressors had a mount plate with bolts sideways compressor to plate. You can see the aftermarket's adjuster at the compressor in the picture also. Factory systems had a much better system for adjusting the belt.
