crankshaft seal

Hi, i have a 92 L and i think my front crankshaft seal is in need of replacement and was wondering if i needed any special tools for the job? also would you all recommend replacing the water pump while replacing the seal. thanks

Yes replace it or you will be back in there soon. Also timing belt, tensioner, and it is easiest to drop the oil pan to get that front cover (that holds the seal) off. oil pan gasket=$17, timing cover set=$17,water pump=$26, timing belt=$18, and she'll be like new. i just did mine last weekend. Do the camshaft seal too while you're in there.

A new seal won't cure the leak unless you put a speedie sleeve on the crank snout. I know NAPA makes them. They have one for the cam also, so buy them both or you will still have oil leaks with the new seals. The old seals cut grooves in the cam and crank snouts.

your old seals could have just dry rotted out, like in most cases, you will not need to go to that extreme of putting sleeves on.

i have rebuilt 3 B3's, never had to sleeve any of them

I'm not so sure I would sleeve the crank without inspecting it.
I've change many front mains without a sleeve...never a problem.
