  • No Spark

I am having "no spark" problems on my 91GL. There is no spark all the way back to the coil. What’s strange is that it starts sometimes but then runs real rough, and then it won’t start at all for the next several days.
I've checked plug wires, no spark...Wire from coil to distributor, no spark...Voltage to wire harness to coil = Ok.

What's throwing me is that it will start once every third or forth day, run real rough, then won't start for the next several days.

It seems like this problem started after it overheated one time. Could it be that the water tube that runs out of the overflow tank blew hot water onto the fuse links or something down in that area behind the driver’s side headlight?

how do you know you overheated and has it done it again? your fusible links are on the front side of your drivers side strut tower on the firewall. if this is an intermittent problem, the links are probably not at fault, but go ahead and put in new block fuses if you haven't already (30, 40, 30A).

I overheated because the inlet hose to the firewall cracked. I pulled over and was towed home. From then on it ran Ok but overheated all the time - had oil in the water. I used K & W block sealer as a temp fix. Let it idle for 20 minutes as recommended. From then on this no spark problem appeared. It starts, then wont, then will but runs really bad, then won't...Right now I am getting no spark at all.

so youre inlet hose to your heater core through the firewall cracked, all the fluid went out, and your temp went high.....
maybe you burned an exhaust valve and don't have compression... but first, if you really don't have spark-then check your distributor... thats where the spark comes from.

Could be the electronic module in the distributor that is faulty, they can play up and I had one that was OK when cold but would not start when the engine was hot, I would check that out first, on my 92 Festy the module is replaceable although if you can get another dizzy (beg/borrow) and try that.

Ok...I found the problem...There was a black wire on the wire harness to the distributor that was broken. I removed some black tape and found this broken wire. Re-connected it and everything works great. After running it for several miles it still has dirty water. I don't know if it is oil or just rust - I'll flush and see what happens.
