  • Ignition Switch Question

I had to replace the ignition switch in my Festiva and used an aftermarket one I bought at Autozone.

It had 4 connection points: Starter, Ign, Acc, and Constant

    I wired it like this:

    Black/White to Ign
    Blue to Acc
    Red/White to Constant
    Black/Yellow to Starter

There are more wires (Black/Red, a green and a red one, and a small black one) but I didn't know where to connect them.

When I turn the key, the starter cranks but it doesn't turn over.

Also, I have noticed a blue wire and a black/red wire next to a box under the driver's seat that look like they broke off. Not sure what these are or if they need to be connected.

So did I wire this right? Any ideas on where to go from here? I have looked at the wiring diagrams on this forum but they look like Chinese to me.

    Any help would be appreciated!

I'd wait for another member to chime in but you'd probably be better off getting an actual festiva switch, but like i said maybe another member can help make the one you got work

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Going to go out on a limb and say the broken wires under the driver's seat are for the seat belt warning system (to irritate you into wearing your seat belt). Would be helpful to know the year of your festiva, as far as the ignition is concerned. And I agree with Kid that if you can find a Festiva one, you'd be far better off.

Welcome to the site! I'm not sure what year your car is but mine is an '88. In the factory service manual diagram it shows a white/Red wire going into the switch and four coming out. coming from the start position is a Black/red wire that goes to the clutch safety switch. Coming from the ignition position is a black/yellow wire that goes to engine fuse and the ignition coil. Coming from the ignition-on location is a black/white wire going to heater, fan, wipers. and coming from the accessory position is a black wire that leads to the cigarette lighter and a/c system. I hope that helps, again mine is an '88 so I'm not sure if it will be the same on yours! Good luck

Maybe if you list your location in your profile, there might be some one close who could help.

Does anyone know if the black/red wire needs to be hooked up to anything?

Also, the instrument cluster has no power (fuel gauge, temp, and backlight doesn't work). Which wires from ignition switch carry instrument cluster power?

you may need to invest in a haynes or other manual that has wiring diagrams..

somewhere on here there is a scan of that diagram....

Dude! Chill out man! And watch the language, this isn't in the Arena, so keep the language clean! a mod will get mad at you.

As for your issue, it's hard to be sitting at a screen possibly hundreds of miles away, and to try and help you fix your car. Maybe these will help

                        On my '90 Festiva L Plus 5-Spd:

                        Off: No connection
Acc: Blue/Red goes to Fuse panel for Cigar & A/C fuses [plus WAC Relay onAutomatics.].
On: Black/Red: Fuse Panel for Heater, Radiator Fan, Rear Wiper.
                        Ign.: Black/White Intrument Panel.

Small wires are usually for buzzer circuits.

                          Ok, now we're getting somewhere.

Thanks for the recent replies and sorry for going ballistic before. What I was trying to say was I was under the impression that this board is full of pros and people who know their Festivas. I expected amateur responses to be very few if any and was frustrated. I shouldn't have been so harsh and I apologize to everyone.

                          So back to my question:

I should have told everyone all of the different color wires I have right now. Here they are:

Black/White I have attached to post labeled "ignition"

Blue I have attached to post labeled "Acc"

Black/Red I have attached to post labeled "Starter"

Red/white I have attached to post labeled "battery"

There is green wire, a red wire, and a black wire unconnected (black is hot)

There is also a Black/Yellow which I have unconnected.

When I turn the key, the starter cranks but the engine does not fire.

Also, the instrument cluster does not light up,gas gauge does not move.

Have you taken a look at the Wiring Diagram's They are Sticky'd. I am also gunna give you a tip. On a car as unique as the festiva i would definitly stray away from "generic" parts. If you cant find the Diagrams or if we dont have it let me know i can always scan it in for you.

In my original answer to your question I said that the black/yellow wire goes to the ignition coil. If the coil ain't gettin' juice, she aint gonna start!........
