  • Knocking Sound???

My engine makes a funny knocking sound from the intake manifold when I rev it. Any ideas, I was thinking maybe distributor or maybe timing??? It started when I whent over a bump.

    Heres some multimedia to assist:

Is this the car you just got from Dan? Does it have oil in it? What kind of bump did you hit and how fast were you going when you hit it? Dont lie either. We can tell when youre lying, because youve typed something.

Did you guys listen to the link he had in his first post? Sounds like rod knock to me, definitely on the passenger side of the engine.

And Festyboy, it definitely gets more noticeable as rpms increase.

Dammit! Rod nock, that sounds bad. So what's that mean, the engine is done? And yes, rofl, although I do constantly have to add oil, it does have oil. Bp swap?? I don't have a spare engine or lift. I want to put in a sohc 16v b8 really. Sohc sounds like to much work.

That means that you've got at least one rod farked up. Either means a rebuild, or a swap. Curious how much oil was in it when the knock started. Kind of unusual for that to happen with proper lube. Only other likely cause would be serious metal in the oil. You didn't dent the pan on whatever you ran over, did you?

Not saying absolutely it's something you did. When I worked for Adelphia, we had a Ford V-10 bucket truck throw/warp rods in three engines, all with less than 20K miles on them. Not sure what those rods were made of, but whatever it was sucked.

Well I've been having to refill every couple days, but I've been letting it get a little low to be honest, I guess I figured it would be okay as long as i added
oil soon after the light comes on, well in my case it flashes depending on rpms. But yea that is When she started loosing oil faster, will have to check oil pan. I ran over a curb to do some offroading is what I did and I felt it hit bottom but I've done that before and it's been ok. Maybe I did it in this time. Damn. Can the engine be pulled from the top if you have an engine hoist? Also would this cause a loss of percieved peppiness?

I've seen that in 2 V-10 Vans so far.

It's the B8 swap and it seems ridiculously easy for what you get.

Yep, the only real way to get the engine out is to hoist it out from above. And yes, it would cause a loss of peppiness, because you would be, at best, running on 3 good cylinders, and one very iffy one. If it's only one rod, and it didn't tear up the wall, you might be able to get by with fixing it. Do you have any idea where the original oil leak was? Don't know how far you drive per day, but a quart+ per day is a huge oil loss. Is that just since the knock started, or was it using like that before?

No it wasn't that bad originally, and it was originally caused by bad piston rings in #1 cylinder. It is still driveable though. I don't see any oil under the car is the thing.

So, is it leaking oil, or burning it?
