This is the shift gate. I had it welded back together and the transmission seems to shift properly again. Haven't had the transmission in a car yet: it's sitting under my workbench "just in case"

Ok-I would like opinions on this-Is this job doable by someone with a decent set of hand tools, no garage, no engine hoist, and a pretty good amount of mechanical knowledge(none of which, by the way, has anything to do with a standard transmission)? I need to figure out my plan of action pretty quickly so any and all suggestions, advice etc... are very much appreciated. Banana-you said you lifted yours out? Most instructions I have seen describe lowering it but that sounds easier than getting the car up high enough to remove from underneath-any info you could give on that procedure or thoughts from anyone else on it would help out a lot.

Been like 4 years ago, but yea, I lifted it and just on dirt driveway. About as basic conditions as you get. Easiest to tie rope to it and lift standing up. Doesnt work so well bent over and trying to lift. Also yea guess you could just block front of car high enough (foot and half to two foot?) to slide tranny out from bottom after you separate it from engine. It isnt that big, bit unwieldy but not big.

You do have lot disconnecting to do and have to remove battery tray and such. Not complicated but lot little details. If you have the manual, it should give an overview. Since I got rid of that bushel basket of vacuum tubing and electronic gizmos when I put in B6 with a weber, anymore if I were swapping tranny, I'd just pull engine and transaxle as a unit, but then I now have a tractor with a boom so no big deal. As I say though you definitely could do it with jack, some blocks or good jack stands and set metric sockets. Need pry tool to get cv axles from transaxle. I just used pickle fork that is meant to remove tie rod ends from cars, just right shape and length. Like $3 at one of Chinese tool places. Or big screwdriver or simular. That pickle fork though was perfect.

Oh and blocking up the car, easiest to put blocks under car frame behind front wheels, keeps blocks out of your way and takes less blocks.

That's what I did when I swapped my transmission. 2 cinder blocks on each side.
