  • Carb Rebuild

Today gravelcrawler and myself worked on rebuilding the carb! Unfortunately, when we completed the rebuild, we couldn't figure out where the vaccum hoses reconnected.... I've got my haynes book out. But if anyone wants to shoot me a pic or suggestion, please feel free!

In the meantime, I'm feeling really good that the carb was my problem this weekend. I just read another post and am positive the fuel pump is working! (We visually saw fuel refilling the carburetor).

Keep your fingers crossed!! Here's a pic of how nasty the carb looked inside! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CAR SETS FOR YEARS UNDRIVEN!

    Carb Pics

    Jeremy,

Sam took some pictures of his carb setup. Maybe this will help.

I have a junk yard carburettor with the hoses still attached. I can give you the colour coding but not the utlimate destination.
Your top photo shows 3 connections on the left hand side. When assembled there are 5.
They are at the back of the carb down low and impossile to photo when carb installed.
Viewing from back of car they are....
Bottom center and bottom right are plugged.
      Middle left: blue dashed stripe
Middle centre: black, ribbed, goes to top left of 4 on on cutout solenoid mounted on front of carb
      Middle right: orange dashed stripe
      Top: black no stripe
      Good luck.

here's more...at the top back of the carb jusn under the air cleaner are three more connections...
Top left just at butterfly valve: black rubbed goes to bottom right on cutoff solenoid
Centre has "T" connection: straight arm plugged, top "T" black ribbed goes to top right on cutoff solenoid.

Here's another... front top centre of carb just under air cleaner: short black hose goes to clear 90 deg tube which goes into white plastic "T" which connects to hose which is cut off on this carb
One more... from bottom front of base plate carb black hose goes directly up to diaphragm connected to automatic choke
That's all hose connections I see on this carb.

In NZ I have had problems with my carburetta and it is the choke breaker, that's the thing sitting by itself on the top of the carby, best is to pull off the vacuum line and if you have a longer piece of hose connect to it and suck with your mouth to check that it is working, I have had two fail over the last 2 years and the engine really does run like **** when it is cold, the problem with the choke breaker if it is not working the plugs foul up and are covered with soot and the general performance of the engine is very poor

Thanks everybody for the awesome info!!! Smedley, thanks for those pics too!!!

Let me see how much further I can get at this point.... it will probablyl be tomorrow before I get back to gravelcrawler's.

We were able to reconnect all of the hoses up on the front, but it's the five or six in the back that we couldn't remember exactly.

              now I know

Looking at the spaghetti in those picures, makes me realize why I chose to get rid of my feedback carb altogether. Good luck with reconnecting all the hoses. People tend to forget how simple the original carburetors once were, before fuel injection. One hose for the gas and one hose for the vacuum advance.

Anything with more than handful of vacuum or electrical connections and it pays to invest in a roll of masking tape and a sharpie pen. Yea it slows removing the carb but really speeds things hooking everything back up.

And I sure like my Weber, but I realize thats not an option for many people due to yearly inspections.

Very true.... and to beat it, we had all that right there. BUT, we thought it wouldn't take long to yank out the carb, do the rebuild kit and throw it back in there. Instead, it turned into several hours worth of getting it out, several more rebuilding it and then by the time we got reinstalling it, we were both like, "yeah, where do these go?!" LOL

So, yes, I highly recommend tape and pen!

If my 88 carb'ed car didn't run so exceptionally well, you can bet I'd be into an FI engine! What a spaghetti tangle of hoses on that carburetor!

You are not kidding, Sam. I've done a few carb rebuilds and I've never seen one as complicated as the Festiva carb. There's more electrical connections and hoses coming off this thing than an alien on life support. Not to mention that rear left intake manifold mounting nut. We had to jaunt up to AutoZone for a 1/4" drive 12 mm U-joint socket adapter to get at it. That right there cost an hour.
